10 Favourite Rockin and Thumpin Christmas Songs
The festive season is upon us again and that means being bombarded with traditional Christmas carols and anthems every time you set foot into a shopping mall, department store or any other retail outlet.
A cavalcade of religious themed music arrives like an annual tsunami, growing in size till it peaks and crashes down on December 25th. All this despite the fact that Christmas has next to nothing to do with holiness since the corporate giants commandeered the celebration and corrupted it’s meaning. After all, fizzy soft drink giant Coca Cola invented the red and white image we see of Santa Claus back in the 1930’s.
The holiday itself stopped being a Christian tool when it ca,e in line with the Pagan Winter Solstice. Though the exact date of Jesus’ birthday has not been confirmed Bible scholars agree it was most likely between August and October.
So what does this have to do with music you may ask? Well in the year 2007 to stick with old school chorus’s of Silent Night, The First Noel and it’s ilk is at best redundant and at worst hypocritical in my personal opinion.
Over the past 50 years musicians have cashed in on the Holiday’s themselves by releasing cover versions of these classic tunes and in some cases written there own original songs in honour of the occasion.
So my question is, what are some of your favourite non-traditional Christmas songs that still manage to put you in a yuletide mood?
Here are 10 of mine:
The Treacherous Three - Santa’s Rap
Here it is in all it's glory from teh film Beat Street it's Santa's Rap
Run DMC – Christmas in Hollis
John Lennon – Merry Christmas war is Over
Elvis Presley - I’ll be Home For Christmas
The Celbrate Rifles - Merry Christmas Blues
Jimi Hendrix – Little Drummer Boy
Chuck Berry – Merry Christmas Baby
Bobby Helms – Jingle Bell Rock
Santamental – Winter Wonderland
Queen – Thank God It’s Christmas

That's an interesting list you've written, great to see The Celebate Rifles in there.
The first song I thought of was Fairytale Of New York by Kirsty MacColl and The Pogues. The song is beautifully haunting. Unfortunately it makes me cry so I don't listen to it that often, but it's one of my favourite songs.
Great topic,

I didn't realise that was you there, nice to see you.
That's great I'm not alone in my tears with that song (if you know what I mean, I'm not wishing you unhappiness).
I haven't seen that documentary, but I've heard of it. I might see if I can find it, I really would like to know more about the song. I loved the video clip of it, Shane MaGowen was dribbling all the place. I think he'd had a few drinks to help him on his merry way. Such a tragedy that Kirsty died, I love her music.
Thanks for evoking the memories,
Tracy
