Kasabian release new single

July 31st 2006 03:42

Kasabian

After looking at the huge sham that is the NME weekly chart, I noticed that Kasabian's new single, Empire was number 1, meaning that it had been released. So I headed over to the myspace to see if they've indeed managed to improve themselves between their self-titled debut and the up-and-coming album release, also called "Empire." First impressions? Not really. Club Foot was the only song I didn't mind on the first album, and Reason is Treason had some potential if it wasn't so horribly dragged out in song structure. But this song just sounds cluttered and extremely messy. The electronic influences are apparent and appreciated, with Muse-inspired distorted bass, but the oh-so-annoying strings intro from Club Foot is back with a vengeance, constantly popping up throughout the song with a mediocre riff designed to simply fill in time.

Overall, I'm not sure on my expectations from the album - this month saw Kasabian frontman and primary songwriter Christopher Karloff leave the band, apparently due to "creative differences." Given that the departure was so close to the release of the new album, it's to be expected that the album will be pretty much all of Karloff's handiwork, and we won't see any post-Karloff material until after this album is released. Until then, it is almost impossible to see whether or not the departure will be musically and creatively beneficial for the band.

Anyways, you can hear the single at their Myspace. Let me know what you think.

The iPod Syndrome

July 20th 2006 03:43

Yes, another iPod expose. But this one isn't necessarily exclusive to the iPod, but simply a syndrome onset by the widespread introduction and usage of mp3 players, and obviously, the iPod is a part of this. Whether or not you like the iPod, its undeniable - the iPod is everywhere. Apple sold close to a million iPods of all shapes and sizes in the last quarter of 2005, and they now control the vast majority of the digital media market through their one simple device. Everywhere you go, you'll see the signature white earphones, or an ad for the player, or the trademark silhuoettes, which have been mimicked to death. But herein lies the problem - with the introduction of mp3 players in the mainstream and the exit of the player from the geek underground, music has become so accessible, that it seems to be simply another symptom, as well as pushing force in the "ADD Generation."

Finally, the thing that we've all been (or at least I've been) waiting for - the music video for Muse's new single, Knights of Cydonia. The song had some elements of Western music, as if it would fit straight into Kill Bill Volume 2, and thus it seems fitting that the video follows suit. Like Quentin Tarantino's last film, the video is a Western with a twist, with a mix of various Japanese fighting styles - an obvious homage to the film - and various scenes within the video in which the band appear as a hologram within a burlesque. This is definitely their best video to date, but then again their past ones haven't exactly been great - what the hell was the Supermassive Black Hole video? Anyways, enjoy.

Ok, I made up the whole "Soft Rock Artists of the Week" thing but at the moment I have three favourite tracks: Knights of Cydonia by Muse, Winter by Joshua Radin and In the Sun by Joseph Arthur. The two latter songs are both acoustic pieces that appeared on Scrubs, in seasons 2 and 5 respectively. These two songs are so emotionally charged, it almost bring me to tears every time I hear either, and I'm not sure how they do it, but they manage to bring out the emotions of even the hardest of listeners. Check them out on their Myspaces:

Gautier/Gotye/Goatie ey?

Gotye
Gotye - Wally DeBacker

Ok wow did I get it wrong. In a comment I made on my post yesterday about Hard-Fi, I sidetracked, saying that I was falling in love with a song constantly played on the Australian public youth music station, Triple J. In the comment, I called the artist Gautier, since that was always what I assumed it was. My comment spurred me into motion and I foraged the Triple J site in search of the artist's true name until I found him - Gotye. Seriously, who spells their name like that. He's from Melbourne I guess...

Hard Fi proud of their Lo Fi sound

July 14th 2006 03:51
Hard Fi

Jason Statham
Jason Statham
Imagine sitting in a cinema watching a British gangster film - any pre-Madonna Guy Ritchie film. The familiar face of the ever-so-bald Jason Statham appears on the screen, a close-up of his face as he begins one of his trademark monologues about Britain, drugs, corruption and the gritty underbelly of London. As his voice fills the speakers, and the screen is busy with a montage of various images illustrating Statham's point, another sound flitters into your ears. Out of nowhere, comes the sound of a synthesised harmonica, accompanied by the faint sound of strings as a base. Then, the bass comes in, a unique yet familiar riff that just seems to fit within the whole context of British gangsterdom. This, is Hard-Fi.

Eurovision 2006

July 13th 2006 03:03
I found myself watching the repeat of the Eurovision 2006 contest over the weekend and I couldn't help but wondering - will the joke ever end? Some of the contestants were seriously horrible - bad Europop, bad folk, and even worse attempts at singing in English. Nevertheless, some of them are pretty funny, so I thought they could be shared. Enjoy.

The Killers release new single

July 12th 2006 03:54
Brandon Flowers
Killers frontman Brandon Flowers

There has been nothing but argument, public disgrace and good ol' feather-ruffling since the Killers released their 2004 debut, "Hot Fuss." Their first album, released in June of 2004, was quickly followed by controversy only two months later, when Flowers, frontman for the band, said "we've already proven that we can write a perfect pop song." Then, in May 2005, he said that the upcoming album would be the best in the past 20 years. Of course, nothing compared to the much bigger controversy as part of the very public feuds that were conducted between the Killers and fellow label-mates, the Bravery in March last year, and now the recent feud with Fall Out Boy, and "dangerous emo/pop-punk." Until now, its all been talk, without no facts or proof to show that the Killers can support their - or rather Flower's - comments, or able to beat the sophomore blues (damn, I used "sophomore").

Outkast
Big Boi vs Andre Benjamin - Which is better?

With Outkast's last effort, "Speakerboxx/Love Below," the double album which split the duo's abilities into two separate disc, the artists proved which of the two were better at writing songs and gaining fans. From Hey Ya to Roses, everyone loved Andre 3000 hands down. Now, they are on the verge of releasing their new album, "Idlewild," in conjunction with their 1930s Western musical film next month. NME are reporting that, in order to support the release of the new album, the band have announced that they will be touring... with a twist. One half of the duo, rapper Big Boi, has announced that he will be doing the tour alone, without Andre. How exactly this will work, I am not sure, since Andre Benjamin is obviously the better half of the band. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Italy Celebrates

July 11th 2006 05:14
I thought it was fitting to celebrate Italy's glorious victory in the 2006 World Cup by posting the italian national anthem. This is the best quality video/audio I could find on the net with the actual lyrics. The anthem is very patriotic, but its alot more exciting than Australia's one.

Ahh, the 90s: the years of MC Hammer, flashpants, the 386, the 486 and Windows 95. The days when playing a computer game meant mashing the keys until you won... at least, according to this video. Contrary to popular belief, the computer industry was aware of technological piracy before Napster. Then again, back then all it involved was putting in a floppy disk, and copying the contents of the desired material. So, the industry put out a warning: DON'T COPY THAT FLOPPY. How best to deliver this message than a cheesy ad involving 90s ripoff hiphop? On the sixth day, God created the cheesy ad. Hilarity ensued.
Enjoy...

The Boy Least Likely To
The Boy Least Likely To

Well, not really fans no. But this is the best cover of Faith by George Michael to date. Of course, not that there's much competition - it would probably take effort to be worse than Limp Bizkit. Nevertheless, while it gets a little country toward the end, it is definitely a good listen. The song, by the indie pop band, "The Boy Least Likely To," can be heard here. You can here some more of their stuff here.

Ok, this is something that has always puzzled me - why do some bands release several videos for the one single? Of course, nothing is as bad as Vanessa Amarosi - even she has a wiki - who managed to release three or four video clips for that undeniably annoying song, Absolutely Everybody. But even Eskimo Joe, that indie pop group from Fremantle, have done it, with their single, Black Fingernails, Red Wine. I only noticed it today, when MTV showed a film clip for it that I hadn't yet seen.

I thought that the one I had seen today, clip no. 1, was actually the second clip released by the band for this single, since I was used to seeing the other one, clip no. 2. This sort of made sense, because I can imagine that no. 2 has the distinct possibility of inflicting epilepsy on viewers (which, apparently, George Gregan's son has), but the guy who uploaded it to Youtube labels clip no. 1 as Version I. Oh well, in any case, both clips are pretty dark, which fits well into the style for their new album, "Black Fingernails and Red Wine." I think I like clip no. 1 better, because of the ending, but you decide for yourself and let me know.
