Music Times - August 2006

The MusicTimes Mixtape August 2006 Edition. Bound to conjure up various emotions from readers, since it is so different in style to the last one. More rock, more dance, more electronica - what you will, this edition is different but just as charged with excellent songs. Peruse and enjoy.

Evermore - Real Life

1. Evermore - Real Life
From "Real Life"
Listen here

The quintessential intro song for any album. Ambient strings and electric guitar build the song, before crescendoing in a consistent acoustic rhythm that continues throughout the song. Frontman Jon Hume has one of those voices that aren't suited to many songs, but this is one of them.

Antiskeptic - Monuments EP

2. Antiskeptic - Dancing on the Inside
From "Monuments EP"
Listen here

Antiskeptic's new materials is a far cry from "Memoirs of a Common Man" and even more ambitious than "Aurora" ever was. This track in particular is heavier, darker, and most likely inspired by the return of Sean Daly as bassist.

Cassius - 15 Again

3. Cassius - Toop Toop
From "15 Again"
Listen here

The French duo have attempted to outdo themselves on this track, experimenting way beyond their existing repertoire into something that is unrecognisable as Cassius and likely only to be a favourite for new audiences, rather than established ones.

The Similou - So Hot Right Now

4. The Similou - Ladykillers
From "So Hot Right Now
Listen here

I heard a Triple J Host (don't ask me which one - I'm so bad with voices on the radio) say the other day that "Sweden is the new black" and, with successes as diverse as Sigur Ros, Mew and now the Similou, it is no wonder why. A mix of dance of pure pop, this song will probably grate on some, but damn it's a great song.

Ok Go - Oh No

5. Ok Go - Invincible
From "Oh No"
Listen here

Contrary to popular belief, the nerdy quartet from Chicago do more than just dance on treadmills - they make music too. Chances are you probably thought that music video was a spoof, but it ain't - it's their real music video, and as good as they're dancing is, their music is better. While this track starts off sounding like Weezer's Beverly Hills, it quickly makes a way for itself as pure rock, without room for gimmicks.

6. Rammstein - Mein Herz Brennt (Tatu Remix)

Ok, I put this in for pure novelty value, but I can't help but like this song. The third-party mashup mixes one of Tatu's less popular songs with Rammstein's Mein Herz Brennt and it works so well. From the shrill screech of the Russian duo, to the building kick and finally into the heavy riff that is so common amongst Rammstein songs, this song is a must-listen.

The View - Delicate Girl EP

7. The View - Delicate Girl
From "Delicate Girl EP"
Listen here
I'm a little hesitant about this song, but for some reason I always end up listening to it. Definitely the best on the EP, it has an acoustic rhythm that sounds like it belongs in an R&B song, and soothing harmonies in true Aussie fashion.

David Ford - State of the Union

8. David Ford - State of the Union
From "I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I've Caused"
Listen here

The biggest drawcard for this song for me is the first time I heard the song - as a live performance on Australian variety show, Sunrise. He's got a generic name but damn he's a good musician - he managed to play the song with an acoustic, piano, drums, and his vocals, all through a loop box. Maybe it was because I hadn't seen it done before, but it worked right down to a t, and made the song all that more memorable.

9. Santa Esmerelda - Don't Let Me Be MisUnderstood
From "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"

This classic song was reworked as a disco hit back in the 70s, and revived by Quentin Tarantino when he included it in the Thurman-Liu fight at the end of Kill Bill Volume 1. The clapping rhythm is enough to get anyone dancing, let alone the guitar and trumpet riffs. At ten and a half minutes, it wouldn't get very far in the charts today, given the attention span of the mass audience in the 21st century.

Cassius go Toop Toop

August 30th 2006 01:21
Here is the music clip of Toop Toop from French house/electronica duo Cassius. My current obsession, the duo are often unpredictable, this particular song being one of the most different from the rest of their repertoire. But the song is excellent and the video is... very French.

Muse reach for Starlight

August 28th 2006 23:33
In absence of real music news, here is the music video for Muse's new single, Starlight. Not that Muse are generally known for their music videos, but this really isn't that great - especially not something that matches up to the genius of the song itself. The clip seems to be based on the single line "the ship is taking me far away," and as a result, the clip goes absolutely nowhere.

World's Worst Band Names

August 23rd 2006 03:06
South Beach Magazine have been gracious enough to compile a list of the World's Worst Band Names. The list ranges from spins on Western culture, to gimmicks, to the downright stupid. Some favourites of mine are:

Angry Amputees

Basement Jaxx

Basement Jaxx have released their entire new album, "Crazy Itch Radio," on Myspace and available for streaming. Haven't gotten around to hearing it, but if its as original as their earlier stuff is, then its sure to be a hit.

Full Killers Video

August 21st 2006 04:34
Here it is. So, while the preview a few days seemed like a Romeo and Juliet ripoff, the rest of the video is not so. While the second LP tries to strike back at claims that the Killers were an American form of British indie rock, why make a music video where the story revolves around Mexican lovers? Oh well, at least the sex scenes don't involve Brandon Flowers.

Another Bloc Party Bootleg

August 20th 2006 05:23
Maybe because it's the first time I've heard this song, but every new Bloc Party song I hear, it gets better and better, both in the quality of the music itself, and the quality of the recording. This time round, Blog Party are offering a listenable bootleg of Song for Clay, recorded at Paredes de Coura on the 16th August. While the song is a little predictable at times, and overly political, it's definitely a good song, and I can't wait until I hear the new album.

Sneak Peek of new Killers video

August 18th 2006 03:59
Thanks to the glory of YouTube, you can now have a sneak peek at the music video for their new single, When You Were Young, the first from their upcoming second LP, "Sam's Town." At first I almost appreciated it - the editing was fast, Brandon Flowers seemed a little more humble than in previous videos... and then, come the Spanish credits, and a quick montage which might as well have "Baz Lurhman's Romeo & Juliet" emblazoned across the top. I mean, if you're going make the best album in twenty years, at least have some creativity in all aspects of it. Make up your mind though, in the one-and-a-half-minute teaser.

Kasabian stream Empire

August 18th 2006 00:25

Kasabian - Empire
Empire

Joining the likes of Angels and Airwaves, Keane and Muse; Kasabian are the latest to offer their entire up-and-coming album for streaming on Myspace. You can now hear all eleven tracks off their soon-to-be-released second LP, "Empire," on their Myspace. I've only just started to listening to it, so I can't really judge it as yet, but as usual they can't really be labelled the best band out there, though they're not the worst. Be warned though - these marketing ploys tend to last a matter of days rather than weeks so get it while its hot.

String Quartet Tribute to Linkin Park
So, like myself and hundreds of Australians unable to correctly adapt to the warm-cold change, you have the flu. While the headaches, blocked ears, sore throat and who-knows what else don't directly affect your music tastes, you often go through the emotional state where you just don't feel like listening to whatever is your daily fancy. You want to hear that familiar melody, but you just wish it were slightly softer, more manageable in your current state. In steps Todd Mark Rubenstein and the String Quartet.

MusicTimes July 2006 Mixtape Part One

August 10th 2006 00:10

So here it is - The Music Times Mixtape July 2006 Edition. A little late, and a little shorter, but just as packed with songs from today, from a few years, and a few from the 80s just to spice things up. I have attempted to vary the artists as much as possible, and hopefully I have succeeded but that's up for you to decide.

It's been a relatively slow week in music - well not really. Of course, there was Lollapalooza, but that was all the way across the Pacific, and Arthur Lee died but I'd be lying if I even pretended to know the impact he's had on the music industry, though I'm sure Pop Musicology can fill you in on that.

"Hunting for Witches" live video

August 2nd 2006 13:34
For the first time that I know, someone has released a video of Bloc Party performing one of their new songs in concert. The song, Hunting For Witches was recorded McCarren Pool and while the audio is of generally poor quality, it remains one of the best audio samples I've heard to date, not to mention the video. Of course, Bloc Party aren't the most entertaining of live bands, at least from what I've seen, but I would still definitely enjoy seeing them in concert. For now, check out the video.

To cheer up the day of anyone feeling down - two new music videos to enjoy. The first is from indie rockers OK Go!, with the music video for their latest single, Here it Goes Again, some may not like this video, but I think it's a really innovative use of treadmills and really refreshes the whole idea of nerdy dancing, something we haven't really seen in all its glory since Fatboy Slim's 1999 single, Praise You. So here it is.

Bloc Party announce album tracks

August 1st 2006 10:25

Kele Okereke
Frontman for British indie/mainstream rockers, Kele Okereke, has announced the first possible track listing for their sophomore album, yet to be titled. The band have just finished recording the list of songs from which they will choose the final track listing. Kele mentioned that, rather than the traditional method of working on all the songs before choosing a final track listing, the band are focusing on their strongest songs, basically meaning that the band essentially have a final track listing, but are yet to disclose the true listing. Hopefully, we'll see the album within the next six months, and will have the chance to yet again rock out to British dance-punk, or whatever the hell they call it these days.
