Arctic Monkeys Win 2006 Mercury Prize
September 5th 2006 23:45
It's official - the British music prize which everyone from London to Dublin covets, has been given to Sheffield startups and worldwide phenomenon, Arctic Monkeys. The prize was given for their work on their debut album, "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" which was released in December of 2005. The prize ceremony took place at Grosvenor House Hotel, and was presented by Jools Holland. Apart from the prize itself, the band were also awarded twenty thousand pounds.
The Mercury Prize has been around since 1992, with Primal Scream being the first winner for their album "Screamadelica." What's good about these awards is that they deicde on the winner based upon the strength of their music, rather than the strength of their sales. 2006's nominations were:
Arctic Monkeys - 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas'
Editors - 'The Back Room'
Guillemots - 'Through The Windowpane'
Richard Hawley - 'Coles Corner'
Hot Chip - 'The Warning'
Muse - 'Black Holes & Revelations'
Zoe Rahman - 'Melting Pot'
Scritti Politti - 'White Bread Black Beer'
Sway - 'This Is My Demo'
Thom Yorke - 'The Eraser'
Still not sure how Thom Yorke got on that list, but that's not to say he didn't want it. Even Muse, who are usually publicly uninterested in such awards, stated that they wouldn't mind the award, though the cash prize wasn't necessary for them. Out of the nominations, I guess Arctic Monkeys is really the standout choice - Muse's latest offering just wasn't as strong as "Absolution," and the Editors' album was plain boring. Congrats go to Arctic Monkeys - God knows that, if critical predictions are true, people will forget the Monkeys in about a year's time.

I don't think the Arctic Monkeys will disappear unless it's of their own volition. I don't see how an album that good can be written if they didn't have enough talent to even follow it up with something even slightly as good.

I read someone elses review that rendered them the best news rocknroll has had since Nirvana, I dont necessarily agree with that either.
I just think they're pretty awesome and so young too.. good on 'em! I hope they're around for a long time!
