Britney Spears
Pop Diva and the topic of infinite gossip, Britney Spears has become a walking punch line. Born in Elvis country, springing from a religious upbringing and a gymnast at school, her career began on the Mickey Mouse club along with Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell.
Being in the spotlight from such a young age seems to have taken a severe toll on Britney’s grasp of reality. Touring the U.S by the age of 15 and she briefly became boy band NSYNC’s opening act.
In 1998 at 17 years of age her debut single “Baby One More Time” caused a sensation with her nubile, school girl sexuality. Releasing her first Album (named for the hit single) the following year, though it was her virginally sensual image and not her voice that would gain fame.
Her second record “Oops I did it Again” (also named for the single) was a monster success financially, though creatively few paid her any mind. Touring continually during 2000 and 2001 she became one of the most successful female singers in history with sold out shows and record breaking sales lifting her profile into super stardom at 20 years of age.
Also in 2001 her self titled third studio effort arrived again debuting at #1 on the Album charts. Never taken seriously as an artist, she began exercising creative control by contributing 5 of her own songs to the playlist.
Taking a break from touring she was back in the spotlight in 2003 with that Madonna incident causing a tidal wave of over exposure. Around this time she also did a TV interview where she commented about having blind faith in President Bush that should not be questioned, further supporting her dumb bimbo persona.
"Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision he makes and should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens." - Britney
Taking full advantage of the free press in November of 2003 she released her next album In the Zone which had the hit single Toxic.
Packaged like a can of Pepsi, (even doing an ad for them) Britney’s career has been dominated by whoring herself as a puppet to the record labels. Energetic stage performances do little to convince that she will have longevity but with her adoring fans always eager to follow her lead, anything is possible. All she needs is for her PR department to reinvent her superficial exterior into a more mature form and just like Paris with a bible, all maybe forgiven.
