Amy Winehouse.
Sure she has her issues with drugs, booze and human interaction, but there is no denying that Amy Winehouse is one hell of a soulful vocalist.
Born in 1983 in SouthGate Britian Amy had her sights on musical stardom from a young age. Turning professional at 16 she began to develop her sultry blending of jazz with R&B backing musicians.
Writing the majority of her own material on her platinum debut album Frank, which included the hit “Stronger than Me”. Exploring and expanding on her style influenced by the likes of Sinatra, and the Motown sound, her image of bee hive hairdo and heavy mascara is a throwback to girl band the Ronettes.
Talking about Frank she says "I listen to it differently now. I am still really proud of it, I still think it's a great album. But, with hindsight, there are some things I would have done differently... Just because I would do things a bit differently now doesn't mean I don't like what's on that album."
Critical of her own work and determined to grow as an artist her second release in 2006 went to number 1 on the charts. Titled Back to Black it merged the old school feelings of Frank with modern rap and hip hop beats. The single “Rehab” was an obvious comment on her denial of addictions and many of the other songs like “You Know I'm No Good” came out of personal experiences.
Battling her demons and cultivating a Diva persona, recent tabloid stories have detracted from her credibility. After cancelling appearances triggered by a manic depressive drug fuelled meltdowns, her outlandish behaviour seems to have been curtailed. Winehouse commented on the binge, "It was just crazy -- one of the most terrifying moments of my life... I just don't know what got into me."
Determined to move on she has announced that a live compilation DVD “Told you I was Trouble” is scheduled for release in November. Also returning to the studio shortly to a record a brand new CD of original tracks and heartfelt covers it seems that the gravel voice and tattooed soulstress may be back on track, still wearing black.
Raw and talented, Amy sings Rehab.
