And the Academy Award goes to...

Insert Title Here
Almost Here, Almost There

Time to talk about something other than "indie," and move onto the opposite side of the spectrum at least a little. I am referring to none other than up-and-coming punk band "The Academy is..." Their uncommon name fits their uncommon style - mixing punk with emo and various melodic styles to create a combination that is just right for listening. I first heard of this band from none other than the MySpace front page, a risky decision I know but what turned out to be a good one. It turns out that the world is indeed small because I proceeded to discover that The Academy is... are good friends with another favourite "Panic! at the Disco" (which I'm sure will appear within the pages of this blog sometime soon) and Acceptance, who I've known for quite a while, but who have too many flaws to consider an overall good bands.

The first half of their album "Almost Here" characterises their pop-punk influences and creates a strong foundation on which to further their career. The opening track, "Attention," while uncommonly mellow, remains the out-of-the-ordinary style which the band thrives on. Complimenting this are tracks like "Black Mamba" which exhibit such a variety of style that it almost makes the second half of the album look rather effortless. Indeed, the second half is not nearly as memorable as the first, but if the first five tracks of the album are anything to go by, then The Academy Is will definitely have a career far into the future.

It's too bad you couldn't link to some samples of their songs. That'd really give us a taste of what the group is like...

Wow, they have over a million plays on their myspace. Their pretty good too, the song season in particular. I dont think they sound punk though, from those few songs they sound more alternative than punk really. Then again, ive listened to 2 songs Kind of sound like an american version of After the Fall...
awesome blog too... next time i do a sydney gig review i'l throw a link your way

Yeah I'd prefer to put them into the pop-punk area or even emo rather than simple punk. Alternative is probably a better term as well, though it seems that these days, anything rock that isn't punk and isn't indie is "alternative." Maybe a good topic for a blog entry... This Friday i'm focusing on "indie" as a term, but possibly the Friday after.
