Australia: Awake to the World?

March 27th 2006 08:26
With the recent explosion of indie music around the world and particularly in Australia, it’s a wonder why some bands have been left out of the group. The iTunes Store Top 100 Albums at time of writing shows Arctic Monkeys, Wolfmother, the Strokes, the Killers and Mogwai leading the way for the Indie rock scene in Australia. While they all deserve to be there, there is a problem. With the exception of Wolfmother, all these bands have made it huge in other countries before accomplishing a similar (or in perspective, lesser) feat here in Australia. Where, I ask, are the others?

We Are Scientists (www.wearescientists.com/) are probably one of the bigger indie bands in the US at the moment, and personally a favourite. Yet, apart from the odd video playing on MTV, I am yet to see their album or even latest single (Nobody Moves, Nobody Gets Hurt) make it big in Australia. While their musical style is not totally foreign to the group of bands previously mentioned, the trio manage to bring a twist to the type of music popularized by the Killers. I think I need to pioneer the way for this band to make it big on the Australian indie scene, even if not adopted by the same teeny-boppers who have wrecked the Killers and to a lesser extent Arctic Monkeys (no one can truly kill the Arctic Monkeys).

But where, for that matter, is the Bravery? Making it big with their single “An Honest Mistake,” (teenage girls everywhere will recognize this song instantly as it appeared during season 2 of the OC), the Bravery (www.thebravery.com) pioneer a musical style left behind in the 80s with such one-hit wonders as the Safety Dance by Men Without Hats. Yet, like many things from the 80s, this style has been refreshed with a new edge that hasn’t been seen before. However, as good as their album is, they are slowly slipping into the world of the one-hit wonders, as none of their succeeding singles have made it big in Australia. Is this band doomed to remain an insignificant band in history, or will it gain the rightful respect it deserves?

Maybe I should retreat into the indie elitist hole others have gradually created for themselves…
