Beastie Boys
One of the most successful Hip Hop rap crews of all time, even more impressive when you consider they are a bunch of Jewish honkey’s from New York City.
The 4 member posse consists of Mike D (Michael Diamond), MCA (Adam Yauch), King Ad Rock (Adam Horovitz) and Mix Master Mike (Michael Schwartz)
Having a massive influence on current music trends the bands early sampling is seminal. Cross breeding jazz, blues and funk with punk, SKA attitude the Beastie Boys sound has morphed over the years challenging convention.
Flippant towards celebrity, often using publicity interviews for personal entertainment instead of promotion, the boys have reinvented themselves several times over and boldly adopt new influences where ever they find them.
Officially beginning their assault on the music industry with the release of the single “Rock Hard” in 1984, their monumental debut album License to Ill immediately made both muso’s and execs excited for more. Using amped up rock riffs as a foundation, Included were the hit singles “Fight for your Right”, “No Sleep till Brooklyn” and “Brass Monkey”.
Answering critics who labeled them “try hard white boy rappers”, the funky Paul’s Boutique improved with more confident scratching, MCing and addictive beats. The retro-grade seventies style of the accompanying video clips started a minor fashion revolution. Songs like “Hey Ladies” and “Shake Your Rump” becoming standards.
Now bona fide cult heroes, the gang set about producing their own records and taking control of their destinies, Check your Head being the first recorded at their own G Son studios.
Ill Communication came out in 1994 to mountains of acclaim and the Spike Jonze directed video for “Sabotage” is still ranked as one of the best ever made. Politically minded the band attempted to awaken the U.S to atrocities in Tibet and injustice on home soil.
Rigorous touring has been a constant since day one and the event stage shows with eccentric costumes often offend audiences and early in their career warranted several arrests.
1998’s Hello Nasty again reinvigorated the fan base with “Body Movin”, Intergalactica and a grand world tour guaranteeing a new generation of imitators and worshippers.
It was six years before their next, titled To the 5 Borough’s which saluted their home turf of NYC. On June 26th their latest album, The Mix Up will hit shelves and no doubt be a culmination of fresh beats, raw energy and addictive rhythms.
