Beck
Hailed by many as a musical savant without peer, Beck’s idiosyncratic sound concoctions fuse rock, pop, jazz, blues, country and hip hop into an eclectic and unique tapestry of synchronicity.
Passionate about his art, determined to embrace his influences and create something original Beck’s style morphs with every new Album release.
Born into a creative family, Beck dropped out of high school to begin his quest for world knowledge and success. Busking on street corners while living in squalor he would sometimes con his way onstage at gigs he was attending.
Overflowing with talent and a diverse understanding of melody he was soon picked up by a label, Bong Load Custom Records and the single “Loser” hit airwaves shortly after, causing a sensation.
Several record deals floated his way, and always the committed artist he signed with Geffen records even though they offered the least cash, they promised the least interference in the creative process.
Beck’s first official album, Mellow Gold was released in 1994 to critical and commercial praise. Around the same time Stereopathetic Soulmanure and One Foot in The Grave came out independently.
Relentlessly touring at the time his stage shows were a humorous and mindful experiences that allowed his eccentricities to come under the spotlight.
Deliberately avoiding the trappings of stagnation the arrival of Odelay signaled a more confident and sincere songwriter with introspective acoustics and therapeutic lyrics. Hits like “Where it’s at” garnering approval from the industry and listening public.
1998’s Mutations was a rawer, folk influenced set, recording one song a day over two weeks, it was released without the singers approval.
The following year saw Midnight Vultures hit airwaves accompanied by a flamboyantly perspirating series of live gigs.
Sea Change in 2002 was a more soulful effort that strained with the emotion of relationships lost. It was two years before Guero was injected with a more upbeat tone that also featured a collaboration with Jack White of The White Stripes.
His latest album The Information came out last year and experimented further with sound FX and individual design confirming that Beck’s musical journey will continue to defy pop trends, instead exploring the infinite possibilities that can come from experimentation.

I didn't know much about Beck, so I enjoyed reading this.
I saw one of his videos the other day. I don't know the name of the song. I just remember the video, of him turning into chairs and boxes, etc.
I haven't seen a better music video than that, but then I don't watch a lot of them. It just happened to be on one Saturday morning.

The Beck clips are as artistically divergent as his music. happy to share some information about one of my favorite contemporary musicians.

when loser came out, i really hated the song and beck went into my 'never to listen to again pile'. however when mutations came out, my ears pricked a little and i had to revisit this artist that i vowed to hate forever. it was at that point that i realised the genius behind the name and have really admired his releases (and even gone back to the prior ones). nice post.
