Beck's new album banned from charts
October 6th 2006 00:38
It seems Beck has proved himself too hot for the British music charts. His latest album, "The Information," has officially been banned from the music charts, after it was deemed as having an unfair advantage over competing albums. The grounds for this decision lie on the fact that the album comes packaged with a DVD, filled with home-made videos for each song on the album. The package also includes a set of stickers so that the listener's can create their own album artwork.
A brilliant piece of marketing, but too brilliant, it seems, for the British charts. It seems that the decision only affects the album charts, no sign on single charts as yet, though it would be unlikely that the singles would also be banned.
A spokesperson for Beck said that the artist knew that packaging the extras with the album could lead to such a decision, but he was keen to include the extras in any case.
I almost feel sorry for Beck. Too bad I don't actually like the album.

I think the best is the goodies that came with Big Black's 1982 Lungs Ep: stuff like dollar bills, locks of hair, photos of Bruce Lee, used condoms, blasting caps, razor blades, bloody tissues, etc. This didn't get the album banned from the charts (it had no chance of charting anyway) but could've gotten them banned from record stores for very different reasons.

While it is pretty unfair to do that to Beck, I would almost take it as a compliment that the British CIN feel so threatened by the package Beck is offering that they resort to banning it from the charts. Unnecessary, but still flattering in its own wierd way.
