Ben Harper
Plucking and strumming his guitar, fusing folk and blues notes resonating as the laid back lyrics paint pictures of paradise. California born Ben Harper has inserted himself into a union between surfing and song, but this is no Jan and Dean meet the Beach Boys thing.
Finding an audience in the care free lifestyle of waves, sun and fun Harper released his first album Welcome to the Cruel World in 1994. His next effort the following year titled Fight for your Mind established itself on college radio and formed the foundation of his U.S fan base.
European crowds had admired him and band the Innocent Criminals from much earlier on and his popularity there is still higher than in his homeland. Socially minded and spreading messages in his music, Harper is not revolutionising just honing a most worthy old school sound for modern ears.
Looking like a love child to Lenny Kravitz and Joan Armatrading his popularity grew with The Will to Live and Burn to Shine. Both CDs contain a confident continuing refinement of sound and melodic words.
The new millennium saw endless touring that had become deriguer from the start. An obvious concert release was due and it came in the form of 2001’s Live From Mars. Capturing the vibes and chilled energy of the Ben Harper experience Mars selects solid numbers that also serve as a greatest hits album.
Continuing to operate at a self regulated comfort level of gigs on the road, somewhere along the way he managed to find time to wed actress Laura Dern. Prolific production of material each year since, Diamonds on the Inside contained several more hits capitalized on by There Will be Light and Both Sides of the Gun.
This year saw the arrival of Lifeline which has satisfied fans and even recruited a few more listeners.
