The Black Angels
Hailing from Austin Texas the Black Angels are relatively new band forming in 2004. There style and influences are a direct throwback to the psychodelic rock days of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and The Velvet Underground. Taking their band name from the title of one of Lou Reed Co’s tunes, their assaulting wall of noise sound certainly invokes the era.
Alex Mass heads up the band as lead singer and his strong gravely voice sounds like a hybrid of Eddie Veder and Lou. Lead Guitarist Christian Bland goes berserk, working within the parameters of classic riffs to really hit some incendiary notes.
Bass Player and keyboardist Kyle Hunt dominates the sound often and his keyboard skills sometimes echo Ray Manzerak when assisted by Jennifer Raines on organ. There’s a female drummer too and she certainly slams those bongos when its needed to fill out the tidal wave of orchestrated design.
I said before the Black Angels hearken back to the late 60’s and early 70’s and so it is appropriate they also come with projectionist Adam Demitri. Adam’s hypodermic hallucinations of vision inject the stage show with the necessary atmosphere to remind of early Pink Floyd.
There self titled debut Album came thundering into my house one day and has never left. The logo featured a morph of the famous Nico image on the front and the songs range from themes of anti war to empowerment reflecting the era.
There second release called Pass Over continues the musical journey mixing something old to make it new with more vibrant guitar, dominant vocals and intense keyboards all driven by the enthusiastic drum beat.
So crank the volume up and set the house rocking with this distinct voice of protest and psychological terror.
