Bootlegs are popular again
October 13th 2006 00:48
The word "bootleg" often carries negative connotations for both producers and consumers - on the producers side, it often means precious money flowing down the drain. On the consumers side, it means suffering through watching a movie filmed within an actual cinema - often with the camera on a horrible tilt - or an unbelievably bad quality recording of a band's live show. I've listened through enough bad rips of Coldplay
Nevertheless, it seems the word is popular again, with some bands promising "official bootlegs" at their live shows. It seems its even spawned its own industry - a little exploration and I discovered that British company ConcertLive specialises in concert recording and mass duplication of these recordings for instant availability of the concert after the show. Bands everywhere have locked onto the idea and decided to give their audiences something a little more. Keane

Unfortunately, the idea is restricted to the UK for the time being, but I'm sure it will catch on soon enough.
