Carlos Santana
.Guitar god Santana exists in the same mythic stratosphere as Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townsend and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Surviving the tumultuous excesses of the 1970’s he continued to pioneer his own mystical, wailing instrumentals. Respected throughout his career, his popularity waned in the 80’s but a massive resurgence in interest during the 1990’s guaranteed his career would thrive in a new millennium.
Born down Mexico way to a violinist father, his life long obsession with music was triggered at an early age. Picking up his first guitar before adolescence a young Carlos practiced emulating American Blues legends like BB King, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters.
Moving to San Franciso in his mid teens Santana quickly immersed himself in the music and culture of the time. It is here that he formed the band that took his name and where he embraced the hypnotic Latin beats of the Conga that would come to define his sound.
The public first sat up and took notice after the rhythmic splendour and epic licks of “Soul Sacrifice” infected the Woodstock festival. Soon after came the release of the bands self titled debut album, which included the classic “Evil Ways”
The second record Abraxas was a monumental commercial success and secured their place in rock history. Achieving fame and fortune was never Carlo’s priority and as the drugs and excesses made their way into the lives of members he took control of his future and the line up changed and the sound became more jazz influenced.
Around this time he began a quest for inner peace and spiritual knowledge that has been a constant in his life and work ever since. As the 70’s drew to a close Santana’s creative journey peaked and in the 1980’s he started drifting more towards pop orientated, radio friendly tunes composed for financial rather artistic evolution.
Now a living legend, Santana’s distinct style is instantly recognizable and has been in high demand for the last decade. Collaborating with many of contemporary music’s biggest names has allowed him feed his passion. Continuing to amaze us with his precise picking that communicates raw emotion through the strings of his guitar this may not be the final chapter in his saga.

I enjoyed this mini-bio, thanks.
I never liked Santana's early stuff much, but since his re-emergence since the 90's - especially when working with other artists - wow : a knockout in my book.
To me, this new work is like being 'inside the music,' like he climbs inside the notes themselves... I like that as much as I like latin music, which has fast become a favourite of mine, as the years have worn on.

Im the other way around, I love the early stuff but think that most of his later collaborations were uninspired...love the stuff he did with John Lee Hooker though (Eg: Chill out)
Thanks for dropping by

To me the singers are background and his guitar are the vocals. No other guitarist can do that except Santana.
