Damien Rice
By Kimmo
Damien Rice is originally from Ireland where he was in a rock band (Juniper) whilst he finished his education at Salesian College secondary school. At that time the band recorded The J-Plane their EP. Every thing was peachy until Damien decided he didn’t like the commerical label so he up and left.
After leaving his band he moved to suburban Italy where he busked and wrote his way across Europe, till he found him self in a coffee shop in Dublin with a band to call his own. It wasn’t long before he was able to record his first album 0, I don’t know what inspired him so much traveling across Europe. But if it helped him writing these great songs I sure am glad it did.
Songs like Cannonball, The Blower’s Daughter, Volcano, all beautifully written and a nice change from the normal ballads. He has great timing for the old chops and changes, a bit of opera, classical or his normal guitar and vocals. Theirs no shortage of musical talent and musical instruments in his songs. Like my favorite song of his, Cheers Darlin’ really unusual song construction, with a sweet clarinet solo and a fantastic slowly building climax.
His next album 9 was released in November 06. Although well worth a listen, to me it just didn’t have the same impact as his first album. When you play 9 I feel like I have heard all the songs before and first impressions last. The abum isn't a total loss they still have some out standing songs, Rootless Tree, Me My Yoke And I, 9 Crimes they all stick to Damien Rice’s theme and why change something that’s working for you right?
