Ike Turner - The Original Rocker

Pioneering Rock n Roll before it even had a name and developing the funk sound, Blues and soul man Ike Turner died on December 12th this year. Now remembered mostly for his hit singles with wife Tina Turner and the domestic abuse that followed, his legacy to the music industry is far wider reaching.

Ike Turner - 50 years of Music

Born in Missippi in 1931 he was struck with the music bug at 8 year old when he began working at a local radio station. Hypnotised by the grooving boogie woogie sounds of the artists that graced the stage for live recordings he formed his first band in the early 1940’s.

The Kings of Rhythm as the band was known were a low key player until 1951 when the hit song Rocket 88 blared across the airwaves. Some now consider this the first official rock n roll single, though the debate rages against the early efforts of the likes of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley.

Signing at the iconic Sun Studios that would later launch the careers of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and others, Ike’s revolutionary guitar distortion with whammy bar made him a most sought after session musician for blues legends like Howlin Wolf and Elmore James.

By early 1960 he hooked up with Anna Mae Bullock, a teen blessed with powerful vocal chords and a gift for success. Starting out as a backing singer it wasn’t long before Ike saw the true strength of her singing and soon Anna changed her name to Tina Turner and the Ike and Tina Revue was born.

There first hit came quickly with “A fool in Love” souring up the pop charts. Remaining at the top until there split in 1976 after a string of monumental tunes including Nutbush City Limits, River Deep – Mountain High, Proud Mary and I want To Take You Higher.

After the separation Ike would never again achieve the same level of success and problems with drug abuse and weapons charges became a constant depression in his life.

In 1993 Ike again began recording and in 1993 was nominated for a Grammy for his album Here and Now.

Though his name will forever be tarnished by the errors of his personal life Ike is a musical artist whose influence will be forever felt.

Music culture in a somewhat big nutshell (LINK)

September 14th 2007 03:44
Our contemporary music tree is sixty years old. Starting from the roots up, this is our story and it's consequent genres.

Elvis Presley
The dirty hips don't lie.
The pop culture wave really started in James Dean's era - the 1950s. This was when the marketing gurus decided there should be such a thing called a "teenager". They needed someone to advertise to, so advertisers created the ideal carefree, thrift spending customer - the teen

Broken Social Scene - The epitome of maturity

Hey waddya know, I'm not that lazy after all. Nevertheless, let me clear something up - I am not an indie elitist. I like bands normally classified as indie - We Are Scientists, Bloc Party, and The Strokes on the rockier side; Sufjan Stevens, Animal Collective and The Shins with their folk/country music. Apart from the fact that there tends to be alot of indie music with very country influences (which I don't really appreciate), I do enjoy the majority of indie music. However, I am in no way restrictive in my music tastes to indie. On the contrary, I appreciate alot of music that is regarded by established indie elitists as the "mainstream" product of "corporate puppets." Blink 182 (their later stuff), Panic! At the Disco, The Academy Is - my music tastes are in no way subject to their genre. But it begs the question, who are indie elitists, and what the hell is indie music anyway?

Emo: Teen Angst or Stylised Punk?

Maybe if I scream loud enough, my ex-girlfriend will come back...

In light of my recent reviews of "The Academy Is" and "Panic! at the Disco," I thought it was the right time to address the issue of what exactly "emo" is. Is it a style of clothing, music, or simply some form of expression of teenage angst? What I'm about to say is based on my perspective of what "emo" is, and is in no way the concrete definition of the term. Check out the end of the blog for links to bigger and (slightly) better definitions of the term.
