‘Hey man I’m going to a gig tonight, they’re an underground Australian band’. They were the words that opened a whole new and inspiring experience of music for me when I first discovered a band called Angus and Julia Stone, a brother and sister from Newport on the Northern Beaches of New South Wales. You wouldn’t know it by the way they meld but Angus was originally a solo artist playing in pubs and open mike nights. The only calibration at this point was Julia singing backups for Anguses set.

Eventually they decided to team up for their first EP, “Chocolate and Cigarettes” in 2006, which included their first singles, “Paper Airplane” and “Mango Tree”. They both got a lot of air time on triple j. after releasing “Chocolate and Cigarettes” and played at small festivals like “Splendor in the Grass” and “Great Escape”.
Later in 2006 they decided to tour the UK to further the bands popularity, which did pay off. I think some of that popularity can be traced back to the tight knit sound of the band, which includes drummer and percussionist Mitch Connelly (also the bands photographer) and bass player Clay MacDonald. Clay is also Angus and Julia’s supporting act with his band “The Orange Bird”.

Their next EP, “Heart Full of Wine” was released in February of 2007, six beautiful and poetic songs which are both natural traits of the band. The title track “Heart Full of Wine” is my personal favorite, sweet and innocent which describes Anguses writing style so well. His voice being so soft yet powerfully piercing is a knockout combo and gets me every time.

With their quirky brother/sister theme working well for them it was only a matter of time before they took off. Their set at the well publicized 2007 “Big Day Out” boosted them into that limelight. Soon after that they released “The Beast”, the single to their first full length CD with 12 tracks. Although not as quirky, they were more musically full and complete. Watching them grow is a great thing and I personally can’t wait for a new album to blow my mind again.
