Hear new Bloc Party (Updated)
November 22nd 2006 00:09
Until now, the leak of Bloc Party's second album has been pretty quiet - scratch that, very quiet. Though of course, the band's label hasn't been sitting around - ever since the album first appeared on various p2p communities, someone has been going around and methodically removing the copies from the Internet, probably the band's label, Wichita Records.
Still, it seems that someone has recognised the problem, and decided to combat it in a reasonable way - allowing fans to hear the first single from the new album three months before its official release. The single, entitled "The Prayer," is the fourth track on their upcoming album, A Weekend in the City, is rather surprising, even considering the unpredictable influences Bloc Party have used in the past. Club and radio DJs in Britain are slowly getting their hands on the single, and Zane Lowe of Radio 1 is one of the first to give it airtime.
"The Prayer," which has gone through at least two name changes since its inception, has been described by frontman Kele Okereke as having an industrial rhythm. Busta Rhymes and the bolero beat have been attributed as influences on the song, though there is also allusion to "Banquet" and "Price of Gasoline," from their first release, Silent Alarm
Head to the radio webcast here. On the left of the page, hit the button "forward 15 minutes" so that the timer says 19:15:00, then listen until Zane Lowe fills your ears with the sweet sound of Bloc Party's new single and, don't worry, it's actually legal this time.
Update: Atlantic Records have setup an official site for the band's new album, which automatically plays the new single. Click here and let me know what you think.
Update 2: Apparently the album cover art I have been flaunting for the past few months is not, in fact, be the true cover art. According to the HMV Product Page for A Weekend in the City, the cover is definitely different. The image is below. So far, the only real information that I can find on the album cover art is that it will be provided by photographer, Rut Blees Luxemburg.
