The Killers release new single

July 12th 2006 03:54
Brandon Flowers
Killers frontman Brandon Flowers

There has been nothing but argument, public disgrace and good ol' feather-ruffling since the Killers released their 2004 debut, "Hot Fuss." Their first album, released in June of 2004, was quickly followed by controversy only two months later, when Flowers, frontman for the band, said "we've already proven that we can write a perfect pop song." Then, in May 2005, he said that the upcoming album would be the best in the past 20 years. Of course, nothing compared to the much bigger controversy as part of the very public feuds that were conducted between the Killers and fellow label-mates, the Bravery in March last year, and now the recent feud with Fall Out Boy, and "dangerous emo/pop-punk." Until now, its all been talk, without no facts or proof to show that the Killers can support their - or rather Flower's - comments, or able to beat the sophomore blues (damn, I used "sophomore").

Finally, something to show for all the talk. British magazine, NME are currently hosting a 40-second preview for the first single to be released from the Killers' new album. You can hear the single, entitled When You Were Young, here. Not that 40 seconds is long enought to properly judge an entire song, but at least its a start. Not a very good one might I add, with more proof that Brandon Flowers has a horrible voice, forcing the band to resort to their well-founded technique of placing echo and various effects on the vocals and, on top of that, drowning them out with the instrumentation. The technique was quite prominent throughout "Hot Fuss," and it seems that the band are yet to be sick of using it. Oh well, make up your own mind on it. The single will be officially released on September 18th, ahead of the album release on October 2nd.

Some of Flower's past controversies:

September, 2004 - In a Rolling Stone Interview:
"We've already proven that we can write a perfect pop song

March, 2005 - In an MTV Interview:
"Look at a band like the Bravery. They're signed because we're a band... I can see the Strokes play or Franz Ferdinand play and it's real, and I haven't gotten that from the Bravery. I think people will see through them."

May, 2005 - In an MTV Interview:
"This album is one of the best albums in the past 20 years. There's nothing that touches this album."

June, 2006 - In an NME Interview:
"You don't realize what you could be getting yourselves into, with Fall Out Boy, and what kind of impact it could have in a way that you don't really want. ... Culturally, if it gets as big as it is in America, it could change an entire generation of people growing up here. Emo, pop-punk, whatever you want to call it, is dangerous. We don't wanna dislike anyone, and we've still never met Fall Out Boy, but there's a creature inside me that wants to beat all those bands to death. They just all go into the happy emo funnel and everyone loves 'em without thinking. 'Oh, Fall Out Boy likes you? Fuck! I'm gonna go buy your CD!'"

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!
Brandon Flowers has the most amazing voice...I wanna marry him!
God you people don't know good music i mean usually bands just get worse and worse as they get better but the killers are one band whove managed to stay true to themselves even through fame and not be sellouts...theyre a million times better than any of that superficial crap you hear on the radio YES THIS MEANS YOU RHIANNA

What??????

I really disagree with this article, mostly on how Brandon's voice sucks...

He hasn't got the best vocal range and yes his voice cracks quite a bit but he has the most emotional voice I know...

If you listen to a lot of tracks like For reasons unknown he can sell so much emotion with his voice...

Your text goes hereYour text goes hereBrandon has a great voice! Yes, it's kind of monotone, but that's one of the aspects that make his voice so unique. Maybe ther's something to be said about his comment regarding the Bravery since the frontman has a similar voice, but that's a (probably wrong) observation on my part. Actually, I'm a huge Killers fan and I don't think the Bravery is all that bad. But Fall Out Boy, don't get me started on them. While Brandon's voice may annoy some people (and I Your text goes heretotallyYour text goes here agree with the person who said he has one of the most emotional voices out there), at least it's not the annoying, whiney, little boy voice that the singer of Fall Out Boy has, along with 89% of all the other bands out there today, especially the "emo" ones. I completely agree and even applaud what he said about Fall Out Boy. Someone needed to say it, they are a disgrace to music today.

brandon isn't a great singer, but he has style and uniqueness. that's more important in my book

His voice is pretty bomb. It isn't boring and it is recognizable, although I will defend to the end that uniqueness is vastly more important than plain old sounding good. I mean, most band singers are a dime a dozen, at least i know Brandon when I hear him.

Good god, Brandons voice horrible? WHERE? The man is a god with the voice of an indie angel.

What a load of trash!

And he has to be just about the sexiest man on the planet right now. I dont now when that happened as he was at one time, just a decent looking chubby cheeked boy who wore a lot of make up, but NOW! Ohh booooy!

He actually does have a reallly impressive vocal range too, "bones" and "for reasons unknown" particularly are songs which demonstrate how he can pull off amazingly tricky notes, whilest still making them appear deep, and for me his voice has an almost operatic quality, comparable to freddie mercury. Seriously, what a man!

I agree with Brandon's take on the Bravery. Although I like a few of their songs, there is something missing about them. My brother and I were watching them perform live and they just feel lackluster. They're missing a certain kind of energy and charm that other indie bands like Franz Ferdinand and the Strokes have.
