The blind man who played blues “pretty good for a white boy”, Canadian guitarist Jeff Healey has died at the age of 41. Finally surrendering to Cancer after battling the disease most of his life.
The tragedy of his demise has been felt throughout the world of jazz and blues, sadly his passing comes just months before his first album in 8 years “Mess of Blues” was due to be released.
Born in Toronto Canada in 1966, he lost his sight at one year old when he was diagnosed with the rare cancer of the eyes, retinoblastoma. By three years old Jeff was already enamored with music and developed his trademark style of playing with his guitar lying across his lap.
Unimpressed with the falseness and rampant egomania of the rock world Jeff early on embraced the vintage sounds of Jazz and Blues. Forming his first in the early 80’s Healey came to the attention of the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughn and his recording career officially began after guest starring in the Patrick Swayze film Roadhouse.

His contributions to the soundtrack resulted in a contract with Arista Records and his first album “See the Light” was released in 1988. Respected by his peers Jeff went on to collaborate with the likes of John Lee Hooker and BB King.

His studio work in the 90’s reflected his love of early jazz pioneers and he also played the Trumpet and Clarinet. A unique and inspirational figure in the music, Jeff Healey will be sadly missed by musictimes.com
