Joanna Newsom readies new EP
February 21st 2007 00:02
When a friend introduced Joanna Newsom to me as "some chick who plays harp," I was a little aprehensive. I've got nothing against the harp but, like the piano accordion, it can be used for both good and evil. Thankfully, Joanna Newsom chose the former, mixing classical harp with a Regina Spektor-ish folk. A quick visit to her Myspace reveals that she is quite the talent, both in her technical skill with the harp, and her ability to write indie-pop songs.
Nevertheless, the American harpist whose influences include Bruce Springsteen, is set to release a new EP, entitled Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band. Springsteenian enough for you? The EP will be released ahead of her new world tour to cover Europe and America, and features one new song and two new versions of songs that have featured on her two previous albums, Milk-Eyed Mender and Ys.
In the meanwhile, head to her Myspace, check out the extreeemely small video for "Sprout and the Bean." Then, once you discover your new-found love for her, become depressed that you just missed her, as she was in Australia last week. Don't worry, I'm in the same boat.
