Jose Gonzales/veneer
By: Kimmo
When you think of all the TV and radio ads that have changed a perfectly good song into an annoying and no longer tolerable one. Well I don’t no about you but it frustrates the hell out of me. I am glade that the same does not apply for "Heartbeat", even thought it was commonly known as the song from that Sony Bravia advert. It didn’t taint or undermine the songs credibility, not a humdrum test of a song’s integrity but it worked for me. And helped to bring attention to this brilliant album.
José’s first record "Veneer" which includes the single Heartbeats was an award winning breath of fresh air, not just for his home country Sweden where it earned an array of awards but for the whole of the music world.
A folk indie muso with that little extra something, that little something that is hard to put your finger on. Something you might find somewhere in-between José’s alluring voice, his unfair skill on a guitar or his great song writing. Funny because I vaguely recall an interview with José saying he had a hard time writing song, that’s why it been so long between albums.
To me it was a no brainier that this was going to be a special CD. With eleven tracks every one giving something new, going through an array of emotions. That he does it with the ease of flicking the wrist is unfair. Songs like Remain and Hints are partially tasty when José slowly builds his songs into an emotional titdal wave crashing the cords on that little Spanish guitar. Then the waters settles and what remains is a slow arpeggio fading into the next song.
Although the style and sound of José’s is quiet unique, as soon as I heard the nylon guitar string and that striking voice the great José Felciano popped into mind. If you can get a sound like José Felciano then you are good enough to be in my select CD collection.
Even though his second album "In Our Nation" is just as good musically Veneer will always be the one I regard as a turning point in current indie folk.
