Lucy Lawless' Solo Musical Career...A Look Back At 2007
March 12th 2008 14:25
Hello Music Lovers
I'm Michael Holloway, a South Australian postgraduate student writing a thesis about inspirational women in music, and the general theme of music as a magical power. Once I'm finished, I'm eager to find a career in music reviewing and writing articles about music for newspapers/magazines/online publications.
Before I begin the thread, I just wanted to point out something interesting. Xena: Warrior Princess star Lucy Lawless has not only embarked on a solo musical career (and is brilliant as usual in anything she does), but her musical director is Michael Orland, the pianist/arranger/musical director for American Idol. Mr Orland is also a fan of Jon Peter Lewis (a noted Xena fan)!
For those of you who didn't even know about these projects, 2007 was a fantastic year for Lucy! Over the past year, Lucy has released three concert DVDs and a live CD, and it looks like she will be busy throughout 2008 with similar projects!
Lucy's songs are both covers (reinterpreted in her own unique style) and original songs written by Lucy herself, most notably Never Pass This Way Again (The Cowboy Song) which is totally fabulous!
The DVDs are titled Come To Mama (performed at The Roxy in Hollywood), Gimme Some Sugar (performed in New York), and Still Got The Blues (performed in Chicago), all of which feature superb cameo dances by Lucy's "Xena" castmate, Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle & Hope).
*Lucy's first live concert solo CD is also called Come To Mama.
Come To Mama (CD & DVD):
*The CD contains two songs that were cut from the DVD - covers of The Beatles Don't Let Me Down and Drive My Car. Also there is a song performed in the DVD entitled Get Down On Your Knees, written by Lucy herself, that is NOT featured on the CD.
Gimme Some Sugar (DVD):
*In this DVD, Lucy wears a catsuit which has become famous among fans. It is this outfit that has led to ardent fans hoping Lucy will be cast as Catwoman in a future Batman movie. She and Christian Bale would make a very saucy team!
Still Got The Blues (DVD):
*While the previous two DVDs pretty much contained songs featured in both concerts, the third one features many songs not on the other two.
Also earlier last year, Lucy released a two-song single with the songs Come To Me (a duet with RuPaul) and Let It Whip. Both songs are excellent and extremely catchy and will make you want to shake your thang on the dance floor.
Come To Me/Let It Whip (CD Single):
*So far this year, Lucy is planning a concert tour of London. Stay tuned for more details!
Of course, I can only hope and dream of a Down Under tour for Lucy. That will be one live show I won't miss!
Cheers, Michael

Which Xena character was she? I don't recognise her.

However, Lucy also played Xena's lookalikes - Diana (a princess), Meg (a *lady of the evening*), and Leah (a Hestian Virgin). None of these three ladies are related to Xena, but for some reason they all look like her.
I always loved how Lucy had different voice mannerisms, personalities, and facial expressions for each of her four characters.
Lucy is a lady of many talents and sings beautifully, plus songs like her own composition "Never Pass This Way Again (The Cowboy Song)" show her excellent songwriting abilities.
Cheers, Michael

Interesting post about Lawless - I had no idea that she was a widely known singer.
Some advice: embed a Youtube clip of her singing so we can check it out... if you're not sure how to do that, send me a message!

I'm kind of new to posting YouTube videos on a blog, but I think I can do it without too much difficulty, I hope! If the links don't come through, please let me know!
Please don't stop on my account, variety is the spice of life and I'm sure people would get bored with just me posting here.
Yes, Lucy is a wonderful singer, and besides her recent solo endeavours, she sang in two musical episodes of Xena, "The Bitter Suite" and "Lyre, Lyre, Hearts On Fire" which were also released as CD soundtracks.
This is a clip of Lucy singing a cover of The Pretenders classic "I'll Stand By You" from her Roxy concert.

Here is a video of Lucy singing her own original composition "Never Pass This Way Again", also known by fans as "The Cowboy Song". This isn't from one of the concerts, rather it's from one of the Xena conventions Lucy is regularly attending.
*This version is acoustic...

EDIT: Sorry, I've been trying to embed the videos, but I'm afraid I'm not so good with that. I will seek your advice as you kindly offered Cibbuano.
Cheers, Michael
