Mellow, but they don't drone
April 13th 2006 03:44
Ladies and Gentlemen - a confession. I heard about this entry's subject - Mellowdrone - from none other than IGN. Yes, the gaming ezine whose readership I can only assume consists entirely 15 year old computer nerds. Nevertheless, my occasional foray into the nether regions of the Internet proved a catalyst in a sequence of events that lead to my discovery of this refreshing indie rock band. Unlike many bands I'm prone to liking, Mellowdrone don't have a specific and continuous style but, unlike Yellowcard which takes this to the point of annoying, they use this lack of style to explore many established sub genres.
Tracks like "Fuck It Man" and to a lesser extent "Limb to Limb" are a mixture of Nirvana influences and a wierd mellowness that I have yet to hear from many other bands, except possibly Tigercity. At the same time, their first track and debut single, "Oh My" is reminiscient of U2, We Are Scientists and, to a faint extent, Sesame Street (you'll understand when you hear the song - check out the Myspace link at the bottom.) While some of their musical choices and ideas are certainly not conventional - The Sesame Street influence in "Oh My" is an example - Mellowdrone have certainly created a unique position for themselves, in that they aren't indie rock in the same sense as We Are Scientists, and yet they use very 80s musical techniques. Overall, their name fits their style - rocky, yet mellow; wierd yet approachable. Their debut album, "Box," is certainly something to try out, even if simply for its uniqueness.

All these bands have myspace pages??
Did you know the most popular 'artist' on Myspace is Tila Tequila? Slate had a great article on how MySpace really only promotes 'skank pop'. Read it here!
I was going to post about it, but I think it's more appropriate for your blog. She's terrible!

As to Tila Tequila - I guess people are drawn to horribleness. Just look at the top 40!
