MusicTimes July 2006 Mixtape Part Two

August 11th 2006 03:33

Here's part two:

Eskimo Joe - Black Fingernails Red Wine

9. Eskimo Joe - London Bombs
From "Black Fingernails Red Wine"
Listen here

One of the slow ballads on Eskimo Joe's latest offering (read the review here), it's a sweet piano-based track featuring lead singer Kavyen Temperly's voice in a new light.

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Live: Manchester and Dublin

10. Rodrigo y Gabriela - One/Take 5
From "Live: Manchester and Dublin"
Listen here
One of the two versions of One that is available on the "Live: Manchester and Dublin" album, this is probably the better of the two. This track bears its heavy metal influences more than Foc does, but halfway through transforms into a more spanish, upbeat acoustic song that mixes the classic jazz song Take 5 with Rodrigo y Gabriela's unique musical style.

Joshua Radin - We Were Here

11. Joshua Radin - Winter
From "We Were Here"
Listen here
A heart wrenching song, this is one of my favourite tracks of the moment, emotionally charged, and filled with enough harmonies to put modern pop punk into a state of depression. Simple, acoustic, and a beautiful addition to any compilation.

Tigercity - Tigercity EP

12. Tigercity - Mountain Pass
From "Tigercity EP"
Listen here
I mentioned Tigercity early on in the life of this blog and, as yet, they are yet to come up with a full length release. Nevertheless, their EP is still a classic, rough, corny and full of 80s synthesisers. This is one of the better tracks from the album, and a definite 2006 favourite. Two new demos, Solitary Man and Dark Water are available on their myspace.

Dirty Pretty Things - Waterloo to Anywhere

13. Dirty Pretty Things - Bang Bang You're Dead
From "Waterloo to Anywhere"
Listen here
Another Dirty Pretty Things song, this is the first single released from the album and a slightly poppier than Deadwood. While not my favourite, it is still an enjoyable song for its duration and only hope Carl Barat can heal fast enough to get some more stuff out there.

We Are Scientists - With Love and Squalor

14. We Are Scientists - The Great Escape
From "With Love and Squalor"
Listen here
We Are Scientists has been one of those band everyone likes to bash, accused of joining the "indie rock" bandwagon simply because its a good way to make money at the moment. Whether or not that's true, the album is still pretty good and I remain pretty firm in the idea that these guys are one of the few good American indie rock bands out there at the moment.

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm Remixed

15. Bloc Party - Pioneers (M83 Remix)
From "Silent Alarm Remixed"
Listen here
The quintessential ending track for a compilation, a long and drawn out remix to Pioneers that shows the genius of the indietronic duo to recreate the song in such a way that it is almost unrecognisable as a Bloc Party track. Kele's vocals and Gordon Moakes' occasional harmonies are all thats left of the song, ripped to shreds to create a slow, strings-based euphony, a wierd mixture of the pleasant and plain wierd, a song that sounds like it is battling itself for control, and its all the better for it.

MusicTimes July 2006 Mixtape Part One

August 10th 2006 00:10

So here it is - The Music Times Mixtape July 2006 Edition. A little late, and a little shorter, but just as packed with songs from today, from a few years, and a few from the 80s just to spice things up. I have attempted to vary the artists as much as possible, and hopefully I have succeeded but that's up for you to decide.

Ahh mixtapes. Unfortunately, while I was born in the 80s, I am not a true 80s kid, and don't have the full memories of the mixtape days, when teenagers everywhere would spend hours making the perfect mixtape of their favourite songs. But the tradition has kept on, through the days of compilation CDs and, finally, mp3 playlists. In commemoration of this tradition I have decided to create a monthly MusicTimes Mixtape, of the best new songs of the month, and some old ones to mix it up a little. So here;s part one:
