Midnight Rage Vol 2: Jarvis Cocker, Jose Gonzalez, and Beck
October 29th 2006 23:46
Yet another week of Midnight Rage proves that the music industry isn't totally doomed. Three of the better videos from the night...
Jarvis Cocker - C*nts are still running the world
I'm not too sure whether this is really a single or not, since Cocker's appearance at the beginning of the clip suggests this was shown at a music festival. Still, it appeared on Midnight Rage, so I'm guessing it now is. From Cocker's debut solo album, Jarvis, the song is not a track of its own right on the album, but actually a hidden track. Still, Cocker's most political song is also one of the most representative of his earlier days in Pulp, gloriously 80s and entirely cynical.
Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats
Actually, the Gonzalez song that featured on Midnight Rage was "Hand On Your Heart" but "Heartbeats" is much better, both the song and video - plus I couldn't find the video for "Hand On Your Heart." The extremely mellow cover of The Knife's "Heartbeats" is accompanied by an extremely colourful clip, mainly for use in a Sony ad, but pure genius nevertheless. His voice can be a little annoying at times, but otherwise he is finally getting some attention after releasing his debut album, Veneer three years ago.
Beck - Nausea
I tried, but I still can't love Beck's new album, The Information. The only thing that caused me to put this song in the list was the true campiness of the video clip for "Nausea" but unfortunately I couldn't find that clip either. The alternative is a little cliched, but good enough.
