This week in music:
- Yes, I know you're sick of me talking about Bloc Party, but ready yourselves for one more mention, at least until they come out with a new album. Fresh from Coachella comes two new tracks which are possibly going to be on their album, whatever the hell its called. You can download "Waiting for the 7.18" and "Uniform," both courtesy of several sources, and found on Blog Party.
- According to Drowned in Sound, Natalie Basingthwaite and the rest of the Rouge Traders are the latest Neighbours stars to export themselves to Great Britain, following the coattails of Neighbours fame to make some dough. Sorry, but was I the only one who hated them? She has been reported as saying:
"The Neighbours connection will help, but we want people to like the song on its merits."
Try writing good songs! Damn I'm glad they're out of here, at least for now, but something tells me that they'll be back, unfortunately. All the best in Britain, I suppose.- I just discovered that Pitchfork, the e-zine flaunted in Love Monkey as the source for all indie reviews actually exists. From what I've read, some of the reviews aren't bad - I wonder if Abbey Powell (the reviewer guest starring on Love Monkey) exists, but I seriously doubt it with a name that bad.
- Both Pitchfork and Stereogum have links to a new non-album Sufjan Stevens song called "Dear Mr Supercomputer". Sufjan Stevens is an American folk indie singer who has, of late, transformed his music from the surprisingly good banjo-based folk to his newer stuff, which combines brass, a full band, a choir and ultimate wierdness. This new song very much fits into his latest album, "Illinois," one of the installments in his ambitious project to write an album about every single state of the US (current count is...two). Have a look at this song, but don't use it as the sole criteria upon which you judge him. I'll write an artist review of him very soon.
- Thanks to my excellent connections within the music industry (also known as coldplay.com). Sorry its so late, but new Coldplay tickets go on sale today for all the concerts. The concerts, which sold out in a little under 2 hours last October, have been subject to reorganisation and, as a result, there are now two whole sections of seats on each side of the stage. Sure, they're slightly obstructed views, but... they're seats. Head over to Ticketmaster for Sydney tickets, or Ticketek for everyone else. Last I checked, the tickets were still available and the site isn't bogged down by traffic, which is a good sign. Search for Coldplay, buy away and good luck. Me, I managed to buy tickets in the first ten minutes last October, forgetting about the HSC for a sweet five minutes and now holding the rights to brag to absolutely everyone.
- I have been able to get my hands on the new Red Hot Chili Peppers' album, the double CD extravaganza that is "Stadium Arcadium" - yes I know, I'm a genius. First impressions are that it is a mix of "Blood Sugar Sex Magick"-style funk, "By the Way" mellowness, some nice new stuff and some... not so nice new stuff. Can't really judge the album as yet, since I've only listened to it once, but expect a review very soon.
- Finally, in order to aid readers in ascertaining what is what on this site, I am setting up a new system of icons which will appear in every post. "WN" is Weekly News, "AR" is Artist Review, "GE," is Genre Explanation and... I'll think some more up when I need to. I'll put them up when I feel like it - hopefully by Saturday.
That's it for now. Enjoy life and listen to good ol Sufjan to get your day going.
