MusicTimes August 2006 Mixtape Part Two

September 4th 2006 00:34

A little late, but here's part two:

The Similou - So Hot Right Now

10. The Similou - All This Love
From "So Hot Right Now"
Listen here
Everyone's heard this song at least once, whether it be through Ministry of Sound, radio or some other means, but like all Swedish music its unescapable. The infectious pop of this song can get a little tiring after endless repetitions, but while it lasts, the song is great.

Kaskade - Love Mysterious

11. Kaskade - Stars Align
From "Love Mysterious"
Listen here
The first track off DJ Ryan Raddon's new album, the track is enjoyable, though not excellent. Reminds me of a Sting remix for some reason.

Cassius - 15 Again

12. Cassius - Eye Water (featuring Pharrell)
From "15 Again"
Listen to the original here
This song has to be my favourite song at the moment. The story behind it is that Pharrell Williams loved the instrumental version of Cassius' Eye Water (From "Au Reve") so much that he wanted to write lyrics to it. The result is realistically a far different song, with Pharrell's trademark vocals and choir-based harmonies.

Snakes on a Plane Soundtrack

13. The Academy Is - Black Mamba (Teddybears Remix)
From "Snakes on a Plane"
Listen here
The remix totally transforms the song into something that is utterly unrecognisable from the original track. The song starts off almost like an R & B song, but the beat is infectious and, as slow as it is, almost danceable.

Sting - Sacred Love

14. Sting - Moon Over Bourbon Street
From "Sacred Love"
Listen here
The original song is good enough, but the reworked acoustic version that appears on "Sacred Love" is pure genius. It lacks conventional timing and any of the musical techniques that the everyone has become numb to over the last half-century, so the song sounds slightly uncomfortable at first listening. But the acoustic guitar, which starts off jittery and slowly gains some imaginable form of timing, is an excellent example of Sting's ability to be totally original.

Kaskade - Love Mysterious

15. Kaskade - All You
From "Love Mysterious"
Listen here
The song starts off sounding like Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek, before gaining pace into a heavy dance song. Like many dance songs, it can become a little tired at times, but it's still very listenable and one of the highlight's of Kaskade's album.

Snakes on a Plane Soundtrack

16. All-American Rejects - Can't Take It (El Camino Prom Wagon Mix)
From "Snakes on a Plane"
Listen here
The last track off AAR's new album, the remixed version is extremely different, adding jazzy electronic piano while retaining some of the strings that make the song so emotional. While the remix has some weak bits, it's an excellent remix in the end, and one of the tracks that makes the "Snakes on a Plane Soundtrack" actually worthwhile.

Track Listing:

1. Evermore - Real Life
2. Antiskeptic - Dancing on the Inside
3. Cassius - Toop Toop
4. The Similou - Ladykillers
5. Ok Go - Invincible
6. Rammstein - Mein Herz Brennt (Tatu Remix)
7. The View - Delicate Girl
8. David Ford - State of the Union
9. Santa Esmerelda - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
10. The Similou - All This Love
11. Kaskade - Stars Align
12. Cassius - Eye Water (Featuring Pharrell)
13. The Academy Is - Black Mamba (Teddybears Remix)
14. Sting - Moon Over Bourbon Street
15. Kaskade - All You
16. All-American Rejects - Can't Take It (El Camino Prom Wagon Remix)

I think the appeal of the The Similou song lies in the fact that it sounds like it's from the 80s...

As is most pop these days. And indie. And dance. So yeah, i think everyone's gone that way

What's old is new again, huh...

I think the fact that everyone's 'gone that way' is a bit disappointing - they all sound the same!

I dunno, I think we've had too much 80s revival going on...

I like it as long as it remains creative and relatively original. Don't forget there was alot of musical diversity during the 80s - its just that we tend to remember the stereotypical pop stuff. Electronica is the big thing at the moment, and that is a direct descendant of 80s synth-pop. I think this revival is a good thing - the synth pop of the 80s was well written but in my opinion, didn't reach its full potential due to a number of factors like recording quality etc. We've learnt over the past twenty years and now we're doing similar music, but doing it better.

In my opinion, the real worry is modern pop from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, but I'll leave that to its own post.
