MusicTimes November 2006 Mixtape Part Two

Part Two:
Australia's attempt at Swedish electropop works to some extent. The Sydney trio have some pretty catchy songs on the album, "I Love It" being one of the best, but as is all-too-often the case, they descend into cliched music that becomes tiring after one or two listens. Thankfully, "I Love It" doesn't suffer too much from this, and as a result its a pretty good tune.
I defy anyone to hate this song. They may be labelled a goth band in todays industry, but back in 1983, they were smooth and jazzy with that slight punk edge to them. Catchy and oh so 80s, the song is brilliant, formulaic and all the better for it. It's just too bad that the song was subjected to a B-side compilation album, rather than finding a place in an official album.
Whats better than original indie-heavy-electronic-crazy-rock than indie-heavy-electronic-crazy-rock mixed by inhouse DJ Napoleon IIIrd? Being one of their catchier songs, "Nine" is the perfect candidate for mixing, and apart from the lyrics and some of the structure, the song is almost unrecognisable, the true song of remixing done well.
This song might sound slightly Bloc Party, but thats because the song is a collaboration with Bloc Party bassist Gordon Moakes. Still, the band retain their own raw, wierd sound, using the guitar as a refreshing driver for the melody, and a unique bass riff that overpowers the rest of the instrumentation.
14. The Good, The Bad and the Queen - "Herculean"

The downside of being Damon Albarn? Every song he sings sounds like a Gorillaz song (except for "Song 2" of course). It doesn't help that "Herculean" bears an odd resemblance to the instrumentation used in several Gorillaz songs. The samples, the harmonica, the choir and the vocals all create that Gorillaz ambience of the song. That, of course, doesn't detract from it being pretty decent. From The Good, The Bad and the Queen

"Thin Disguise" is the point at which Sneaky Sound System go from decent to pretty bad. It teeters on the edge, with the cliched synthesiser riffs, the horrible lyrics, and the TV Rock-like verse, it's almost unlistenable. It's saving factor is the Daft punk chorus, electronic, and a little too short, but enjoyable nonetheless.
16. The Futureheads - "Hounds of Love (Phones' Wolves At The Door Mix)"

It turns out that, apart from being the brilliant producer behind such releases as the Futureheads, Bloc Party, The Rakes, The Rapture and White Rose Movement, Paul Epworth is also a genius remixer under the name Phones. Just like his edit of Bloc Party's "Banquet" from Silent Alarm, the Futureheads remix retains most of its structure, but adds an extra electronic dimension, and a heavy dance beat that makes the song enjoyable on an entirely new level. From Ministry of Sound Mashed III

The mellow opening track for the Decembrist's new release, The Crane Wife, is oddly uncomfortable and comfortable at the same time. The way the instrumentation comes together is soothing and while the vocals are a little unsettling, the rest of the song is pretty damn good.
When I first heard We Are Scientists' live cover of "Hoppipolla," I thought it was... crap. But the EP version is much improved, obviously no match for the original Sigur Ros tear-jerking version, but a good attempt at it nonetheless. It's definitely a little wierd when Americans try and sing in Dutch, but its a decent attempt in any case, and a great acoustic cover of the song that everyone loves.

Some great selections in there. Lovecats is one of my all time favourite songs, and I love the Bloc Party. I've never even heard of Your Code Name is Milo or Death From Above 1970. Looks like I've got some artists to check out!
