Musictimes September 2006 Mixtape Part Two

October 5th 2006 00:59

11. Acceptance - Take Cover (Acoustic)
From their Myspace
Take Cover was the only song I really liked from the "Phantoms" album, but some of the harmonies really bugged me. Thankfully, the acoustic version softens the harmonies somewhat. It's just too bad that they've now joined the list of many who have called it quits in 2006.

12. Saosin - Sleepers
From "Saosin"
These guys are probably the first band that I've been able to say that I've followed since their demos. Now that their debut album is finally out, I guess I've built them up too much in my mind, but this reworked version of one of their demos is still a great addition to the mixtape.

13. Cog - Run
From "The New Normal"
First off, there is alot wrong with this song. It has three or four intros that the song can't seem to make up its mind, so they're all just bundled in, one after the other. But something about this song draws me in - maybe its because they're from Syndey, but most probably they just remind me of the days of innocence, when I used to like P.O.D. That's right, I used to like em, wanna fight about it?

14. Jamiroquai - Runaway (Alan Braxe and Fred Faulk Remix)
From "Runaway Promo"
Of the various versions of the new single available on the promo CD, I probably prefer this the best. The remix seems to combine the best of the two - it still sounds like a Jamiroquai song but at the same time feels like it could be on the next Ministry of Sound compilation.

15. The Boy Least Likely To - Be Gentle With Me
From "The Best Party Ever"
The pure countryness of this song is likely to put many people off, but the band I discovered after hearing their genius rendition of George Michael's Faith have made another reason why they are a much better alternative to the Scissor Sisters, and all without that extremely homosexual vibe (though Faith probably has that same vibe).

16. The Killers - Why Do I Keep Counting
From "Sam's Town"
Yes, another Killers song, but its hard to miss this epic. In a similar vain to All These Things That I've Done, it only has one hook, but with the help of great harmonies, it manages to last those few minutes.

17. Jet - Holiday
From "Shine On"
I'm not sure why Jet hit us with the horror that is Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is for a first single, when Holiday provides a slightly better case as to why you might want to waste your money on this. Not that I have anything against Jet, but this is perhaps the only song I even remotely like on the new album.

18. The Kooks - Time Awaits
From "Inside In Inside Out"
I hate getting caught off guard, especially when I learn about the latest indie-rockers to hit the British music scene from none other than MTV. Still, I think this track is a good representation of their debut album, starting off as the standard indie rock effort before becoming a unique creature by itself.
