MusicTimes September 2006 Mixtape
October 4th 2006 00:14
September's playlist is a little different, mostly in the fact that it is slightly more representative of what music was actually released during the month of September. Rather, than having seperate links to where you can listen, simply click on the album cover. Enjoy.
1. Teddybears - Different Sound (Featuring Malte)
From "Soft Machine"
The Teddybears are an electropop band with a penchant for rap and reggae collaborations. However, the second track on this album is far different - danceable, heavy on the bass, and with distorted vocals enough to fit on a Taking Back Sunday album.
2. The Killers - Sam's Town
From "Sam's Town"
The opening track for the best album in twenty years has to be instantly likeable, and at least the Killers have achieved success on this front. The first track from the second album begins with a crescendo that gets your heart beating, and ends in a loose chorus that sounds like it was recorded in a bar.
3. The Rapture - Whoo! Alright-Yeah...Uh Huh
From "Pieces of the People We Love"
"Disco-punk" rockers the Rapture are no strangers to the funk that emits itself from their instruments, and this song is definitely one of the best examples of that. Complete with consistent cow bell, the song is simply excellent.
4. Architecture in Helsinki - It's 5
From "In Case We Die"
I'm not too sure why it's taken this long for this song to make it to a Musictimes Mixtape, but its here so enjoy it. Sounding almost like an Australian version of the Polyphonic Spree, its certainly campy but a classic example of how Australia is among the best.
5. The Thrills - Don't Steal Our Sun
From "So Much for the City"
The piano-laden leadon from It's 5 is just as campy, but has enough of a Beatles feel to it, saving it from lying at the bottom of a list of songs you'll never hear.
6. The Killers - When You Were Young
From "Sam's Town"
Hearing this song gave me deja vu from a time when I hated Muse's Supermassive Black Hole. I'm willing to take flak for the choice of this song, because as much as this isn't a great song as a single, within an album context it's somewhat more enjoyable.
7. Basement Jaxx - Take Me Back to Your House
From "Crazy Itch Radio"
As unimaginative as it is that Basement Jaxx are progressively releasing singles in the same track order as the album, the second single from the album (Track #4, though interrupted by two interlude tracks) is one of the better tracks on the album. I can guarantee that the high-pitched chorus won't strike a chord with everyone, the creativity captured within this one song is unprecedented.
8. Beck - Strange Apparition
From "The Information"
I actually found it difficult to pick a Beck song to put on the mixtape and it basically came down to this and The Horrible Fanfare, Landslide, Exoskeleton which, apart from being a poor attempt at chucking a Sufjan Stevens in title naming, was basically a mixup of musical riffs that would be good on their own but put together in a single song just sound unnecessary.
9. Ben Kweller - Sundress
From "Ben Kweller"
I know i know, this mixtape has become cluttered with campy songs, but you just gotta love that infectious pop. From the melancholy piano intro riff to the heightened popalicious chorus, this is as bipolar as a song can get, and I love it.
10. Augie March - One Crowded House
From "Moo, You Bloody Choir"
You know the music industry is changing when a song like this comes along and causes such popularity as it has so far. The slow-rock countryish song is put off slightly by the annoying accent, but as much as I tried not to like the song, it has constantly come back to haunt me, and I've given in.
As a little something extra, here's the clip for Architecture's It's 5. It's some of the worst quality video I've ever seen, but you can endure it.
