After looking at the huge sham that is the NME weekly chart, I noticed that Kasabian's new single, Empire was number 1, meaning that it had been released. So I headed over to the myspace to see if they've indeed managed to improve themselves between their self-titled debut and the up-and-coming album release, also called "Empire." First impressions? Not really. Club Foot was the only song I didn't mind on the first album, and Reason is Treason had some potential if it wasn't so horribly dragged out in song structure. But this song just sounds cluttered and extremely messy. The electronic influences are apparent and appreciated, with Muse-inspired distorted bass, but the oh-so-annoying strings intro from Club Foot is back with a vengeance, constantly popping up throughout the song with a mediocre riff designed to simply fill in time.
Overall, I'm not sure on my expectations from the album - this month saw Kasabian frontman and primary songwriter Christopher Karloff leave the band, apparently due to "creative differences." Given that the departure was so close to the release of the new album, it's to be expected that the album will be pretty much all of Karloff's handiwork, and we won't see any post-Karloff material until after this album is released. Until then, it is almost impossible to see whether or not the departure will be musically and creatively beneficial for the band.

and they were VERY pretty lights. music was swill, however. new single stinks.
