Outkast minus Andre 3000 - What's the point?

July 12th 2006 03:51
Outkast
Big Boi vs Andre Benjamin - Which is better?

With Outkast's last effort, "Speakerboxx/Love Below," the double album which split the duo's abilities into two separate disc, the artists proved which of the two were better at writing songs and gaining fans. From Hey Ya to Roses, everyone loved Andre 3000 hands down. Now, they are on the verge of releasing their new album, "Idlewild," in conjunction with their 1930s Western musical film next month. NME are reporting that, in order to support the release of the new album, the band have announced that they will be touring... with a twist. One half of the duo, rapper Big Boi, has announced that he will be doing the tour alone, without Andre. How exactly this will work, I am not sure, since Andre Benjamin is obviously the better half of the band. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

yeah, isn't that just the breakup of the group?

I don't think so - at least, not unless its a very slow breakup. They seem pretty keen about this album'movie simultaneous release. But in my opinion, Big Boi is simply an anchor for Andre. Not only is Andre a great artist, but he's a pretty good actor - just watch "Revolver," Guy Ritchie's last film. Apart from a horrible script and all those crappy Kabbalah references, the movie was appealing due to Andre's acting abilities (and Jason Statham finally showing that he is able to actually show emotions, and do a good job at it). I wouldn't be surprised if, in the near future, Andre finally decides to become a solo artist and basically be a better version of Will Smith, though I think a main role in an action film probably wouldn't be the best career move for Andre.

boy i love the love below... andre got the funk big time.

but speakerboxxx still has my undying respect. 'ghettomusic' is near enough a drum n bass track. class act. i have real trouble picking a favourite out of the double album.

Unfortunately, I didn't actually listen to the double that much - my knowledge only really extends to the singles Hey Ya, Roses and Ghettomusic. As repetitive and poppy as it was, I have to say that I liked Hey Ya the best - Roses just seemed a little too childish for my tastes if you actually listened to the lyrics, and Ghettomusic was decent but wasn't thaat great. My favourite Outkast of all time HAS to be Miss Jackson, - it was simple, catchy and emotionally-charged. The chorus was genius, leading bands like the Vines to cover it. However, just so I clear it up, the Vines weren't the first band to do this even in that style - I first heard Miss Jackson covered in an acoustic setting by another local band, Able, back in 2001. They were a great rock band, who unfortunately weren't round for very long. However, the frontman for the band, Marty Sampson, is now in another band, Small City Music.
