The ancient Aussie tradition that is, having a few on a Sunday night before you enviably start the week, I had feared was all but lost. However, last night (Sunday) I not only had the privilege of enjoying a few in the smokeless atmosphere of the Evelyn on Brunswick Street, but had the absolute pleasure of being introduced to the musical residence of this buzzing little pub.
The Benson Campain, is a two piece band (that last night included a Cornish Double Bass player), that have been playing together since 2005, whose motto is to write and play music that “us Aussie’s” can relate too.
These boys not only know how to harmonise, and explore an enormous depth and range of music, in what seemed a fleeting set, but above all they provided the audience with an incredibly captivating, and engaging performance.
There presence on stage was almost immediately felt, the lead singers beautifully, eerie Australian accent filling the entire of the Evelyn. Together, The Benson Campain provided the night with a real Aussie vibe; lively, relaxing, soothing, vibrant, and not to mention some seriously imaginative and innovative mechanics to provide us with some truly unique sounds.
However, the night was with out a doubt stolen by the bands drummer (Nick), who entertained the crowd with his incredible musical ability. Included in his repertoire was not only drummer/tambourine but he thrilled the crowd with his amazing beat boxing, whilst playing the pan pipes, on occasion simultaneously, then to jump back on his drums for an utterly ripping solo. To convey my great ore at this musical genius would not do the band as an entire justice. It was well worth the listen, and absolutely worth the entry, if ever you need a great start to your week, or a wind down to your weekend, head down to the Evelyn Sunday night to enjoy what can only be described as an extremely unique experience.
