He was a Mississippi child, raised in a gospel home but attracted to the dirty darkness of soul and R&B. His strong, emotional voice brought the sound of pain and longing to his songs, which have lasted generations as soul classics.
His song "A Change is Gonna Come" was an inspirational song that moved millions with it's patient message - confidence in the future, the assumption that, no matter how bad things were now, they would improve.
After the election of President Obama, and during the election run, countless YouTubers decided to cover their own version of the song, feeling that message, that finally things could change in the United States.

Was that what Sam was waiting for? A half-black President? I don't know if he thought that far ahead, but certainly, things worked out like he said.
If only Cooke could follow his own lyrics... he was shot dead by a motel owner after screaming and ranting at her, half-naked. There's still a conspiracy theory to this day, but the truth seems to be the likely story: Sam hooked up with a girl, fell asleep drunk. The lady stole his money and his clothes, then ran off into the night... Cooke got up and screamed, drunk, at the motel manager, looking for the girl - in his drunken rage, he must have seemed insane and dangerous, which prompted the manager to pull out a gun and shoot him.
A fiery, disastrous end for a legend, and an unfitting last ticket. Still, Cooke's life is an excellent reminder that your words and your message have to be reinforced by action...
