September 2006 in Music
September 18th 2006 11:50
I've noticed that it's not always easy to know what albums and what music is coming out when - in fact that the closest thing I've seen to it is an unofficial list hanging at the registers in North Ryde JB Hifi. I thought I'd lend a hand to MusicTimes readers out, about what's come out so far this month:
5th September
Audioslave - "Revelations"
Smash Mouth - "Summer Girl"
Beyonce - "B'Day"
Blind Guardian - "A Twist in the Myth"
The Black Maria - "A Shared History of Tragedy"
12th September
Bob Seger - "Face the Promise"
Xasthur - "12"
The Mars Volta - "Amputechture"
Electric Six - "Switzerland"
Everclear - "Welcome to the Drama Club"
John Mayer - "Continuum"
Norma Jean - "Redeemer"
Lionel Richie - "Coming Home"
Papa Roach - "The Paramour Sessions"
Justin Timberlake - "Futuresex/LoveSounds"
Mastodon - "Blood Mountain"
The Barenaked Ladies - "Barenaked Ladies Are Me"
The Black Keys - "Magic Potion"
The Rapture - "Pieces of the People We Love"
R.E.M. - "And I Feel Fine... The Best of the I.R.S. Years 1982-1987"
Veruca Salt - "IV"
Daz Dillinger - "So So Gangsta"
Swollen Members - "Black Magic"
Though my experience of the albums within the list are rather limited, so far I'd have to say that the Rapture's new album is the standout piece of the lot. I have the new Mars Volta album, but have not yet been able to properly assess it - the same goes for John Mayer's departure from bubblegum pop, though I saw his new single on MTV yesterday, and it is pretty good, at least in comparison to Your Body is a Wonderland. Absolutely no expectations from Audioslave's latest offering, and after a single listen-through of Timberlake's new album, don't expect it to appear on MusicTimes as a review anytime soon. Smash Mouth's new album was definitely a suprise, so we'll have to see how that one pans out.
As for the rest of the month...
18th September
Scissor Sisters - "Ta-Dah"
19th September
Elton John - "The Captain and the Kid"
Fear Before the March of Flames - "The Always Open Mouth"
Jesse McCartney - "Right Where You Want Me"
Chingy - "Hood Star"
Lupe Fiasco - "Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor"
Black Label Society - "Shot to Hell"
Jane's Addiction - "Up From the Catacombs - The Best of Jane's Addiction"
Insane Clown Posse - "The Tempest"
Fergie - "The Dutchess"
Clay Aiken - "A Thousand Different Ways"
Mushroomhead - "Savior Sorrow"
New Found Glory - "Coming Home"
Thugs N Harmony - "Thug Stories"
25th September
Larrikin Love - "The Freedom Spark"
Rhapsody of Fire - "Triumph or Agony"
26th September
Janet Jackson - "20 Y.O."
Aly & AJ - "Acoustic Hearts of Winter"
Saosin - "Saosin"
Mario Vasquez - "Mario Vasquez"
Jerry Lee Lewis - "Last Man Standing"
Paul McCartney - "Ecce Cor Meum"
Sean Lennon - "Friendly Fire"
Wierd Al Yankovic - "Straight Outta Lynwood"
Ludacris - "Release Therapy"
Vanessa Hudgens - "V"
If I was to hate but one band, without question it would be the Scissor Sisters. Their blatant ABBA influences, the overly gay/metrosexual dancing, the unnatural music videos, the screeching falsettos - everything about them just kills me from the inside. Nevertheless, not all is lost for the rest of September - I have been a loyal unofficial supporter of Saosin from their first EP, and what I've heard of the new album is promising, though they're definitely not the greatest out there. A new Jerry Lee Lewis album is tempting merely for the doubtlessly record-breaking number of other famous people singing on the album in an attempt to regain some form of credibility in a world that no longer requires 1950s black rhythm and blues for its rock n roll influences. Could be a good listen.
