Slash's Autobiography
Gun’s N Roses were one of the biggest rock bands in the world during the late 80’s and early 90’s before the members imploded under conflicting personalities, creative differences and mind warping debaucheries.
Now, former lead guitarist Slash has written a tell-all autobiography about his life. A candid memoir, littered with unfettered anecdotes the book has enough sexual exploits and excessive drug use to rival the definitive rock n roll lifestyle told in Motley Crue’s The Dirt.
Released last week, loaded with juicy gossip and heartfelt purging the book tracks Slash’s early days in England, where his passion for music was triggered by listening to the Aerosmith’s album Rocks. Moving onto LA where he met buddy Axel Rose and began a tumultuous journey to musical infamy.
Revealing struggles with sincere addictions to alcohol, crack cocaine and anything else that was available, the band was notorious for its volatile backstage behaviour. His consumption of illicit substances nearly resulted in his demise and it was only through several attempts at rehabilitation did he manage to avoid “Knockin on heavens door”.
“Slash sat me down at his house and said, You've got to clean up your act. You know you've gone too far when Slash is saying, Look, you've got to get into rehab.” – Charlie Sheen
The rivalries and violent fights between the band are legendary and Slash insists the book is not a continuation of the name calling that has lingered ever since they split in the mid 90’s, instead he has tried to chronicle the events as he lived them.
"This is not a vehicle for me to vent. It's not to lambast Axl or to talk shit about anybody else. It's just telling the story as I knew it." – Slash
Of course no book of this type would be complete without detailing some titillating sexual exploits and here we get plenty of moist tales about orgies with porn stars and exploited groupies.
After leaving Guns N Roses, Slash formed an outfit called Slash’s Snakepit that met only limited success. Today he is again lead guitarist beside ex Gunners Duff and Matt Sorum in Velvet Revolver which also has Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) as its lead singer.
Featured here is an interview Slash did about the book with the ever amusing Conan o Brien
Here is some stoned footage of the band doing an interview for Appetite for Destruction in 1987.
