The 2008 Oscar Nominees for Music in Film.
This years Academy Awards are again upon us and just like the movies that receive nominations, the music signalled out as the finest in cinema also tends to be elevated to a position of industry and market prestige.
Irony is few winners stand the test of time, after an initial wave of interest they often become just another tune on the radio seldom linked back to the event. Songs like Raindrops keep Falling on My Head, Can you Feel the Love Tonight (Elton John), Streets of Philadelphia (Bruce Springstein), You Light Up My Life (Joseph Brookes), Say You, Say me (Lionel Richie) and Things Have Changed (Bob Dylan).
Often catapulting what would have been a marginal successful tune into an upper stratosphere orbit reserved for greatest hits of all time. Think My Heart Will Go On (Celine Dion) and take My Breath Away (Berlin).
Disney melodies have always been a favourite of Academy voters and this year seems to follow that trend with 3 different songs nominated. Personally I haven’t had a chance to hear any of the tracks up for the gong this year so I can’t comment on the quality.
I always find the musical score category more interesting. There is something far more emotive and memorable about a well written instrumental or orchestral arrangement that compliments moving pictures. Of this years choices, James Newton Howard’s work for Michael Clayton has stuck with me.
Below you can have a look at all the 2008 nominees for music, what would get your personal seal of approval?
