The best Soundtracks of 2007
I have always been a little confused why the big movie and music awards shows like The Oscars and Grammy’s never bother to award soundtrack albums.
Granted, many are compilations of existing material but still these tunes are given a new existence in the context of the scenes they are used in. (Eg: Green Onions in American Graffiti, Bad to the bone in T2, Little Green Bag in Reservoir Dogs, Layla in Goodfellas etc)
I am also a big devotee of classical composition scores to elevate the emotional experience that emerges from moving pictures edited into a certain rhythm. An obvious example would be John Williams, would Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, Superman or Jaws have been the same without his orchestral wonders?
So with this in mind I thought it would be appropriate for musictimes.com to have its first ceremony in honour of some of the best overall Motion Picture soundtracks of the year 2007.
So here are my selections, some instrumental others riddled with classic hits:
#1 Zodiac
A worthy contender for the inclusion of Donovan’s Hurdy Gurdy Man alone, the fact Isaac Hayes, John Coltrane, Sly and the Family Stone etc turn up makes it a gem
Death Proof
Tarantino does it again songs like Chick habit, Stager Lee and the Love were a pleasure to revist.
Into The Wild
Eddie Vedder’s music soars and listening to it independent of the film results in an equally rewarding experience.
Black Snake Moan
The Black Keyes wail and Samuel was born with a delivery for the blues.
Juno
As quirky and eccentric as the film itself puts you in a nice place.
Superbad
Funky fun that includes Soul Finger.
Darjeeling Limited
Indian flavoured delight combined with the Rolling Stones and The Kinks.
Michael Clayton
Establishes a sombre mood that I have enjoyed for the atmosphere it creates in the background.
Sweeney Todd
Great songs, moody themes and Johnny sings.
So what soundtracks of the last 12 months have made there way into a repeated play cycle in your house?

Were there any others that stood out this year I didn't mention?
I actually thought the American Gangster soundtrack was also good. (Not the Jay-z one)
