Boys don't cry, but babies do
November 30th 2006 03:42
Yellow Wiggle Greg Page today quit long-running children's quartet Wiggles, citing orthostatic intolerance. But that doesn't taint the news that children's music is now the fastest growing segment of the music industry, having jumped sixty percent in sales in the past year alone. Music labels are rushing in to capture the relatively new source of income, by creating a new look on old music. Radiohead got the treatment, and now the Cure are receiving the same - now selected Cure hits will be modified for the land of dreams, becoming lullabies.
Boys might not cry but babies do, and so performer Michael Armstrong has stepped in, to transform the Cure songs with the use of various instruments characteristic lullabies, including the glockenspiel, vibraphone, harps and bells. The album is a part of the Rockabye Baby! series, which has previously utilised such bands as Radiohead, the Beach Boys and even Metallica in order to put children to sleep and hopefully introduce them to classic (and not so classic) hits from bands of the past and present.
Planned future releases include those based on songs by Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, U2 and a host of others from various genres, time periods and backgrounds. It's all still a little wierd but if string tributes can be so good, then maybe lullabies aren't too far off. You can listen to some of the songs here.
