The Escopeterras: The Guitar Gun?
September 21st 2006 00:54
An electric guitar fused onto a gun? Possibly the wierdest instrument I've ever seen, they are the work of Cesar Lopez, a Columbian musician and peace activist. His creation is called the Escopeterras, and while the gun is no longer functional, the guitar is in perfect working order.
Lopez belongs to Battalion of Immediate Artistic Reaction, a political activist group in Columbia comprised mainly of musicians and various other artists who call for change in the Columbian government and social life. The Escopeterras - with its decomissioned gun symbolising the end of killing, and the guitar representing the passion behind their cause - is obviously a sign of Lopez's attachment to the group.
The guitars, with the help of musical instrument craftsman Luis Alberto Paredes, were initially constructed from decomissioned Winchester Rifles, but now however they are made from the AK-47s. Lopez claims the idea for the instrument came when he noticed that he held his guitar in a similar position to the way a nearby soldier held his gun, though with this being in the midst of the Bogota club shootings, it seems that this device has quite the history.
As yet I've been unable to find any concrete examples of the music produced by these guitars, since the majority of his work as a musician comes in the form of piano-based jazz and classic, but here are three samples of his work. The second, Eterna Presencia has some form of guitar in it, though whether this is one of the Escopeterras is uncertain. You can check out his official site for more info, though it is in Spanish.
