Damon Albarn is good, bad and apparently a Queen

November 29th 2006 00:59

The Good The Bad and the Queen

It's hard to write about a band with no name. How do you refer to them - "the guys behind that new album," or "Damon Albarn's new project" or maybe even "the new rock supergroup from that dude who sang Song 2." Whether it be out of protest against commercialism, a lack of imagination, or simply an attempt to be as alternative as possible, the new outfit created by Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn is yet to be named, and it might stay that way. Still, that hasn't stopped the ever increasing buildup of anticipation over the release of the album The Good, the Bad and the Queen.

Of course, considering the lineup behind the album, that's a no-brainer. Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz), Paul Simon (Clash), Simon Tong (The Verve) and Tony Allen (Fela Kuti, Africa 70), all together in the same studio, aided by none other than Danger Mouse, famed producer, and the thinner half of Gnarls Barkley. Now, two years and a Gorillaz album later, the band are on the verge of hitting it big with their debut album, if it can be called that.

The album began in Nigeria in 2004, hardly the expected birthplace for an album that is mainly about West London. From there, they enlisted the help of Clash bassist Paul Simon, and the album began to take shape. Damon describes the album as "a series of letters and historical stories and moments in time. It's not a nostalgic play on Englishness. It's more about what I think it is to be English now. I think we've made a record that has quite a fresh approach to this part of London."

Anticipation revolves around the hope that they won't follow the path of other supergroups and make a bad album, though there's little chance of that, judging by their first single, "Herculean." The single, released a month ago,can be heard at their Myspace. The album is set for release on January 22 next year.

Jimbo,

How are things going for you?

Love the picture, very informative for those 'with it' young people who actually know who's who, although the good, the bad and the Ugly, oops, sorry Queen has a familiar ring.

For some reason I went through a stage of confusing the Good, The Bad and the Queen with Eagles of Death Metal, though thats probably because the latter includes the frontman for Queens of the Stone Age.

I'm just wondering what's going to happen if the same outfit as this one make a second album. Would it have to be called "those guys who made the Good, the Bad and the Queen with their second album"?
