The source of all Indieness

Ok the lens flare and the couples thing is a bit cheesy

Thomas Cavanagh
Decided to break away from the norm for a day, in order to inform readers of my new discovery, in the form of a TV show called Love Monkey. I might be teasing all Australian readers by saying this, but Love Monkey is officially the best TV show ever. Based on a novel by the same name, the show airs on the VH1 in the US, chronicling the movement of Thomas Cavanagh - formerly of "Ed" fame, and cameoing as Zac Braff's brother in "Scrubs" - from major record label producer to New York indie label, "True Vinyl Records," and the various musical/emotional adventures he endures on the way.

"Going from a major label to an indie label would be a step down for some people but for me, its like paradise..."

I swear his eyes have changed colour
Ok, it might not be the best show ever. It falls into the same trap as every major network show, focusing on the emotional and romantic side of things, and creating a formula for itself which it can't break out of. It's up to its fourth episode at the moment (don't ask me how I know, or how I've seen them) and so far all the episodes I've seen have some sort of episodic romantic thing about them, whether it directly affects Tom Farrel himself or one of his close friends. There's also something about Thomas Cavanagh - it seems that in between his appearance during season 4 of "Scrubs," and his subsequent season 5 cameo, he has changed to such an extent that he seems almost creepy. He retains that unique acting style, but something - whether it be the jet black hair, or the fact that his eyes are now a bright blue, makes him very labouring to watch for 42mins each episode.

Nevertheless, the show has one thing that proves that VH1 isn't following the same path as musicless MTV. That, of course, is the music. While the show has its definite failures, it is ultimately about indie music and the struggles that indie labels have in making it in a world dominated by commercial structures and major labels.

The True Vinyl Records Office
Not only this, but the show relies to an extent on real artists - Wayne, the major artist that Tom Farrel produces throughout the episodes, is as far as I know based on the actor's real life music career. At any chance given, the show will riff off a huge list of indie artists - episode 3 had a cameo from James Blunt towards the end, and episode 4 not only featured a live act from "She Wants Revenge," but also named Architecture in Helsinki (an Australian indie band nonetheless), as well as Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, the Killers, and a special cameo from Paul Shaeffer, who will be known to many as that bald musician dude on David Letterman.

If it is at all possible to watch this show, I recommend you give it a try. Sure, it isn't the most riveting show in the world - despite my comments earlier - but simply watch it for the music and I promise you won't be disappointed. Oh and, by the way, if anyone knows where I can get a single of Wayne's song, much appreciated - I've grown to love it so much!

I dunno if I will fly to America to see this show, but I will sit on my lounge chair right now and watch my Scrubs DVD.

Yay Scrubs!

There are always other ways...

But yay! Another scrubs fan! I've been a fan of Scrubs for I don't know how long, and I think I might write a post in the near future about how they use music in that show...

I love the music in the show...it is so...Scrubs. I don't know, it just really seems to suit the mood they go for.
