Twins

February 26th 2008 11:00
Gillian Chung Charlene Choi Twins
Twins is a group from Hong Kong, made up of two girls, that perform music known as Cantopop, pop music sung in Cantonese.

Cantonese is spoken in Hong Kong and some of Southern China. The Hong Kong market is huge, though, and mainland China also has a ferocious appetite for Cantopop.

It's no surprise, then, that Twins is a hugely successful group, famous all over China.

The two singers are Gillian Chung and Charlene Choi.

Charlene Choi was born in Vancouver, Canada, but moved to Hong Kong when she was small. She's a rather successful actress, and even before I went to China, I saw her in a movie during the on-flight entertainment. She often plays 'cute' characters, mugging for the camera and pretending to get angry with guys that she's obviously going to hook up with.

Gillian Chung is originally from Hong Kong, but studied at RMIT in Melbourne, which is our Australian connection to her. She's also an actress, but less notable in the film industry.

Nevertheless, she's super-well-known right now, due to a scandalous scandal, involving her and a Hong Kong actor and pictorial evidence.

Yes, she's part of the Edison Chen sex photo scandal, one of the 14 women that he slept with, took pictures of, and now those pictures have been leaked all over the internet.

Twins was a group that played to the Cantonese love of 'cute' and 'innocent'... the naughty pictures have already destroyed Chung's image. Perhaps she'll have to reinvent herself as a new breed of singer, sexy and deadly. Or perhaps she'll fade into obscurity, the Chinese society turning their back on her, happy to pretend that she never existed...

Wow...this really is a music blog! I never thought I'd see Twins mentioned on a non-Asian based blog, seeing as their popularity really is (or was) limited to China (HK) and Taiwan.

In case anyone really was losing sleep over this, Charlene apparently willl embark on more solo projects, whilst Gillian has gone to Japan to refine her art as a performer (well, that's what people are saying in the forums!)

By the way, I'm sorry to bring this up, and maybe no one else noticed because no one is really into them, but the picture you have up of the two girls isn't actually Twins. The girl on the right is definitely Gillian (aka miss i'm in hiding), but the girl on the left is a Taiwanese actress by the name of Fan Bing Bing.
