Welcome to the Rabbit Hole
March 27th 2006 07:55
To quote the infamous Matrix line, "You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes..."
Despite the numerous connotations this line could have to drugs, I like to think of it as an analogy of the Sydney music scene. Wonderland - where croquet is game of choice, and music tastes are as random as the draw of a card. However, unlike Wonderland, no one music scene rules as Queen, but instead it is subject to invasion from all sides, by all characters, from those as random as the Mad Hatter, to music as mainstream and "conservative" as the rabbit who ironicly drew you into the hole in the first place.
The rabbit is undoubtedly pop music, music choice of teeny boppers everywhere, and yet from there, the rabbit hole branches off in so many more directions. Take the Veronicas - rocky yet as poppy and comercially constructed as Britney Spears. Yet they played recently at the Metro Theatre, possibly the indiest of indie gig halls. And thus, from one music scene to another, everyone is entitled to their choice of style, be it indie, pop, heavy metal or, dare i say it, gangsta rap.
Treat this blog not as the final word, but merely an opinion and a gateway into a different thought. Sit back, and enjoy Wonderland...

But I know what you mean. These days, it seems people are either emo or indie, which is my running joke with Jesse these days. Indie is ironically now mainstream, so which ever choice you pick, you're "selling out."
Nevertheless, I like to think that I listen to "indie" because I actually like the majority of music that falls under that umbrella. I'll leave that whole topic for another blog entry though.

There still is true indie though, many weird underground bands out there that have sold themselves out by placing the title "indie" on themselves, but rather letting the audience decided on that. I just want it to fade away again, where it was unique and diff to listen to this kinda of music. Something new will come, and only the true fans will stick by their music.
