Top 10 Music Biopics
The website lovefilm.com has just polled 2000 DVD users on the best Music Biopic, I don’t say DVD lovers because there choices are a little weak.
The Johnny Cash life story Walk the Line takes top honours, not a bad choice but the tick a box delivery of the story doesn’t make it the best that ever was.
The Mozart melding of fact and fiction with Amadeus (#3) is a little more appropriate in my eyes because of its grandiose cinematic staging.
Oliver Stones reality warping Doors movie with Val Kilmer channelling Jim Morrison as his Indian guide is also worthy of a higher rank than 5th,. It’s a film that truly altered perception and reality appropriately for it’s subject.
It was great to see the powder keg Alex Cox (Repoman) film Sid and Nancy get a nod. Gary Oldman owns the part of Sid Vicious and the frantic style creates a thick mood of authenticity.
Likewise for BackBeat with Stephen Dorff as the enigmatic Stuart Sutcliffe, also known as the 5th member of the Beatles.
So to round out the apt selections, now for the craziness…. M&M’s 8 Miles of Chocolate came in at 2nd….Ray made 4…and the rest include Whats Love Got To Do With It (Tina Turner), La Bamba (Richie Valens)…then there is Control (Joy Division) which I haven’t seen yet, but shows promise from the trailer.
Personally the first 5 I listed would probably make my top 10 too, so I have been a little harsh. So here are some of my favourite Music Biopics that weren't included -

Don Weiss’s The Gene Krupa Story with Sal Mineo as Gene Krupa
Gordon Parks LeadBelly with Roger E Mosley as Huddie Leadbetter
Jim McBride’s Great Balls of Fire with Dennis Quad as Jerry Lee Lewis
Steve Rashes The Buddy Holly Story with Gary Busey as Buddy Holly

It was www.lovefilm.com that put walk the Line at #1, not me. Either way i agree its not a bad flick, with some cool moments from Joquain Phoenix.
Backbeat I absolutely loved, really amazed with its power and authenticity.
