Audioslave deconstructed

Audioslave

Audioslave's first single from their new album, "Revelations" - Original Fire - is a few weeks old, but it hasn't been until now that the full connotations of the song hit me. First, let's take a look at the video. Listen carefully to the lyrics and the music:

Now there are four interesting things about the song:

1. The two most obvious ones are that it is in no way original but a ripoff of every 70s song in existence; and...

2. Its video basically follows in the latest trend of paying homage to contemporary music, something already done by the Chili Peppers, and Gnarls Barkley among others. However...

3. As many have probably noticed, the song contains a really really really poorly fitted guitar solo which is a direct link to Audioslave's past as Rage Against the Machine. Had the guitar effect never been done by RATM, it would of course be unique, but unfortunately its been done so... its not unique in any possible way.

4. The lyrics go along the lines of:

The original fire has died and gone, but the riot inside moves on"

It seems Audioslave frontman and principal songwriter Chris Cornell has woken up to fact that Audioslave are a shadow of the glory that was Rage Against the Machine. The guitar solo and chorus lyrics are a potent combination that both allude to the idea that RATM, the "original fire," has gone, and that Audioslave is the "riot inside," going on, but never truly fiery enough on their own accord.

Now I realise this is is no way the last word on the situation, but simply food for thought. Lyrics have any of thousands of connotation if they are good lyrics, and it seems in this case, it is remotely possible that Chris Cornell might finally know that they will never be as good as Rage Against the Machine were.

hahahahah I take it you're an RATM fan?

man, these superbands are all arse.
Velvet Revolver are just as bad. It's all boring hybrid shit, none of these guys want to do anything new - all their fans are just fans of their previous bands, none of them are fans who are attracted to the new band purely because of the new music.

Queens of the Stone Age were bad enough - they were never really that great. Now they've gone and created another "superband" called Eagles of Death Metal, though they're pretty much the same band anyway. I guess none are as bad as Audioslave though - it's so obvious that Chris Cornell is running the show and the band members have no creative control.

I like QOTSA, but Eagles of Death Metal are pretty bad.
