Why do classic rock bands continue to perform?
“I'd rather be dead than singing "Satisfaction" when I'm forty-five.” – Mick Jagger
The 1960’s and early 70’s were a pivotal era for prolific rock bands who revolutionised the soundscape of musical history. Now it seems they are continuing to return with albums and tours decades after their prime, why?
Is it that a high demand by loyal fans that fuels this desire? Or is it that the passion for music and the need to stay working is a personal motivation for members? Perhaps it’s the almighty dollar that draws them back?
“If there's another charity, or a reason to bring us together, I could see it happening. Otherwise, no. And we've had lots of offers. But we're just not going to do the $250 million tour.” – Roger Waters
The Rolling Stones seem to be eternally in concert, despite the fact that each subsequent tour results in claims of retirement. The recent announcement of a Led Zeppelin reunion and also the possibility of the return of Pink Floyd has triggered this quandary in me.
“We went in and recorded exactly where we were at that point in time. I think because of the quality of musicianship of the band has given it the longevity. I thought the music would endure, I didn't think I would.. I always thought I'd be dead by 30 then dead by 40 and on and on. Now I'm 55 so I didn't even die at 50.” – Jimmy Page
Now I am the first to admit that I own pretty much all the records from these landmark artists up to around 1980. I have attended several retrospective performances that are dominated by recycling the old catalogue of hits, only occasionally interspersed with new material.
So this is not a criticism, I can totally understand the need to create and entertain, especially if the passion and motivation are still there. I hope to be writing till the day I take my last breath and I am a complete unknown so to comprehend having a gigantic international fan base and the satisfaction it brings is an alien concept to me.
What do you think motivates these unparalleled artists returning to the arena?

The rock bands you're mentioning are better (IMO of course!) but I think they are just beign greedy.

you know as a young university student now, i often wonder what would become of the bands i am into now? would they end up like the stones and would i in 30 years time still go ballistic over them like it's 2007? makes me shudder to think of the possibilities that lie ahead.

Natural Animals
If I was them, okay any of the above reasons could fit.... but also, the buzz they must get performing.
You go to some of these older bands and are so relaxed and into it, and having all of us screaming and cheering has to do some kind of 'high' for them, that to be would be quite addictive and better than sitting back on the lounge retired sipping on a tinny with the missus.
