World Cup Anthems

One of the most important aspects of any Football World Cup is of course... the theme song. Instead of spending their time on creating a decent logo, or mascots that didn't look like they came straight from Bear in the Big House (sorry can't remember the name of that show but you get the drift), the marketing team for Germany 2006 obviously spent the majority of their time on picking the theme song. Or should I say songs. Because, it appears that instead of one, they chose three theme songs. Don't ask me why, they just did. So to commemorate the World Cup in the most musical way possible, I've decided to share the videos for each of these three.
But first, I believe it's necessary to cause you to hark back to the distant past, the history of the World Cup Theme Songs. And of course, as soon as you mention World Cup Theme Songs, what comes to mind? Nothing but the infamous Ricky Martin song, Cup of Life, the theme song for France '98. Thanks to the glory of YouTube, and all those millions out there who have nothing better to do than to upload 8 year old video clips, feast your eyes.
So now you have taken a trip down memory lane, time for the new stuff. First up is Celebrate the Day, a German song by Herbert Grönemeyer that is purportedly the anthem of the 2006 World Cup. The song is rather bland and, while Ricky Martin's song wasn't exactly excellent, it at least had some substance. Apart from the tribal beat, this song doesn't have too much. Nevertheless. enjoy the song, and the flashbacks to past World Cups.
The second is a collaborative effort between American quartet Il Divo and Toni Braxton, a wierd mix and one that doesn't really work in my opinion but a good try nonetheless. The song was written by BMG composer Jörgen Elofsson, and the video clip is similar to the Celebrate the Day one, in that it involves flashbacks of previous World Cups.
And, finally, just to make sure things are really shaken up, a Shakira song. Why? I don't know. Is it about the World Cup at all? No. So, again, why? Again, no idea. As far as I know she will perform this song live at the closing ceremony or something to that effect, but I don't see why you would waste the effort. Consider it random clip of the day.
